Am I the only one who doesn't agree with these big shows? We go to all the trouble of providing the absolute best conditions for our animals and then go to shows where they clearly are not been kept in conditions even remotely suitable even if it is short term. |

its only for a maximum of 8 hours, they are very well cared for snakes before hand and most of the time from very repuatble breeders that care very much for there snakes. its like if you were going to take your snake to the vets then you would put it in a tub, you wouldnt bring the whole rub with all the hides and a water bowl. |

If I was taking my snakes to the vet they'd be in pillowcases inside dark tubs to keep them calm, a process of no more than an hour tops. A totally essential part of their care.
Shows in well lit rooms, in the middle of the day, with lots of the animals not having access to water and hides is in my opinion is not a suitable environment for these animals and their needs are not been met. I'm not doubting the capabilities of the breeders, I'm sure they do take care of their animals in their normal location. |

Bob that's the problem It's only your opinion, most people who breed do so with the intent of making a profit by selling them on, and one of the ways is to have rep shows, because if you were that bothered you wouldn't actually have reptiles in the first place given that all the animals in captivity decend from wild caught and i'm sure they are treated a lot worse being dragged from there home and transported to a totally alien enviroment, cause even though we do our best to provide suitable living conditions, they aren't natural, but that's only my opinion |

Yeah I think the shows are fine, snakes are ridiculously tough creatures they're fine in a "stressful" environment for 8hours. I think people have a tendency to baby reptiles a little more than we should :) |

I don't see my opinion been a problem at all, its a perfectly valid opinion and I'm sure its not just me who thinks its not in the animals best interest. I'll leave it at that, not hijack the thread, I've learn't not to go against the grain I just hope for the reputation of this trade something changes. |

well ok then in your opinion what changes do you think should be made that would supposedly stress the reptile less? and why do reptile shows such as doncaster give this hobby a bad reputation? |

I have not yet been to any of the northern shows, but will be at some point.
I have no issue with how the animals are when they are there, so what it's not perfect but they are animals. I don't care how pigs are kept before I wrap slices up them up in bread with some onion and butter. All I know is that regardless of the condition that an animal is in before I get it, it will improve after I get it. If that's a nice decent home, or 2 slices of toast makes no odds.
The only way that anyone could see better treatment of the animals at the shows is simply for everyone to stop buying them. If demand drops then no one will produce so they wont even bother to have the shows. |
