I have just given Bambi her mouse and she has missed the head...which she has done a few times before but normally she manages to re-adjust and get it down head first.
This time, however, she seems very certain that the mouse must go down sideways! Could this damage her in any way?? I'm a bit concerned as it really doesn't look very comfortable...and there's not much that I can do to help...is there??! |

| Depends how big it is really sometimes I've left it and once it's gone down a little it's automatically turned the right way. Other times I've taken the mouse out of the snakes mouth as I was sure it wouldn't turn |

Large mouse? or pinkie etc?If she couldn't get it down.she would spit it out after trying.or would give up etc.
Keep an eye on her,ive had snakes do this.they give up if it don't go down right.

Thanks for the reply.
Its not a massive mouse but it doesn't look like it will turn. Won't it damage her teeth or make her grip tighter if I try to take it out of her mouth?
I'm not sure which will be less stressful for her...trying to take it out of her mouth or letting her struggle with it and potentially swallow it sideways?? |

| Yup, the silly thing is trying to bend it in half and eat it stomach first! I haven't been looking at the time but I'd guess she's been trying it for about 15 minutes...hopefully she'll give up soon! |

Hmm normaly they work it out way before then.So she has a good amount of said mouse bent in half,and in her mouth? not just a bites worth?
hopefully she will give up soon,give it afew more mins.then you might have to take it of her.Unless you think she can swallow it ok.
if its small enough it will go down fine,if the mouse is to large,she will eventually notice that its not going to work.you could be waiting for awhile. |

Yeh she normally figures it out much faster, which is why I came on here to ask how best to help her out as she hasn't had this much of a struggle before!
She's got more than a bites worth sideways...not the brightest of snakes!! I'll give her 5 and then see if she'll let the tongs help her out.

it can take them upto an hour to notice,they cant eat it sideways,She should either eat it,if the mouse is small enough and be fine if she does.Or spit it out and try again head first.
yeah just don't try and pull it of her. |

Mouse was surprisingly intact, so a quick blast with the hairdryer and she struck again and got it down in one, the right way round.
Sorry for the fuss...I think I worry too much!! |

Yup, all gone! She's around 11 months and the last time I weighed her she was around 240g but that was a little while ago as I've been waiting for her to empty! Still fairly small for her age though, but she's healthy so that's all that matters!
She's on medium/large mice at the moment (size varies between the 2 shops I use)...hopefully will be on rats soon though! |

Hey good news then :) she should beable to eat small weaner rats now,the small weaner rats from my shop,are around 38g to 50g.Not much difference from a large/adult mice.
Once shes on rats her weight will rocket up.So its worth getting her on rats as soon as you can. |
