First of what is backyard breeding, everyone and anyone buying dogs to breed thinking they will make money?then they end up in centers?

bearded dragons etc are the same, but in each case will be very hard to ban.

i do agree theres a lot of people breeding bearded dragons an corn snakes but its a bit more specialised that dogs. i understand it would be very hard to ban the breeding of staffies but i would like to see it made so you can only breed them if you have a licence an RSPCA checks etc.
ive been reaserching the problems with over breeding staffies, its horrible an some of the stuff ive read has nearly made me cry with the way they are being treated and put to sleep just because they dont like up to the hard dog image or stop producing litters for the scum who just want to maker money.

Alot of breeds of all kinds of things are mistreated and over bred. How many times have you seen people on forums asking for help, when they just purchase two animals, thrown them in together seeing ££££,then come online asking for help.As they did zero research before hand.

You can't have the RSPCA doing checks and giving out licences, thats to much power. They would use it for there own means, more then helping out said animals.Would have to be goverment run etc.

Its a cool idea,And i agree 100%,just be careful what you want banned etc,as it never ends at just one thing. Most of the time when stuff is banned it only affects the law abiding persons. The people you're talking about will bred anyway.

Signed by me chris, am with you all the way on this. Correct me if i'm wrong but people no longer need a dog liscence right? I've worked in a rescue centre when I was younger and had to leave in the end because it was so heartbreaking seeing how poorly some animals are treated by their owners and yes (despite what the public at large is led to believe) dogs, cats etc ARE euthanised just for being unable to be rehomed.

I wholeheartedly blame the (current and previous) government for this situation for their total lack of action on a matter that has been a problem for years. Reintroduce liscencing, mandatory chipping and a national register of all owners and maybe this will curb if not stop the barbaric way a lot of animals are treated before (if they're lucky) being able to find a new, loving home.

It makes my blood boil that for a nation of supposed 'animal lovers' these stories will continue to crop up time and time again but nothing ever seems to change. Maybe we should go to source of the problem? Find the cretins that continue to treat the animals they are responsible for like this and put them to sleep instead?? At the very least lock them away for a good few years without possibility for parole as a mandatory sentence.

What makes it sting all the more is that the government CAN take action - dangerous dogs act - but is so painfully slow to do so. Hopefully this petition will start the ball rolling and hopefully get this practice banned for good.

I'll apologise now to any members that think i'm going OTT or venting too strongly but in my honest opinion, causing animals to suffer is just as bad as harming a child. The situations to me are the same - while in our care they are reliant on us for food, water, love, warmth & safety ; if you can't provide this then you shouldn't be allowed to have them in the first place.

Nothing OTT about that I feel very similar

Nowadays people forget that owning a pet is a privilege not a right.

Staffies are the example of how bad things have really got. Any sort of pets for sale section on sites like Gumtree, Preloved, local papers etc is chock full of staff pups for sale - because people think it's fun to try and have puppies or think they will make money etc

Then its full of year old-ish staffies who owners have had their fun and realise they can't take care of a dog.

You can only hope that these dogs go to better homes but the odds are they'll be re-homed to someone with a much of a clue about looking after a pet rock as their last owner

i'm all for the return of the dog license. BUT the odds are the people it's designed to stop wont give a monkeys about the law...lets face it these are the same sort of people who will drive a car with out insurance etc... they have no regard for the law at all and so they will carry on. Because its not that important in the grand scheme of things these people do, a bit of illegal dog ownership/breeding will continue.

As for full on cruelty, i'm of the thinking that if you can happily torment and mistreat an animal, its the first step on the way to complete disregard for any sort of life - and i have experience of that.... we used to have a drug addled woman living upstairs, who rent herself out quite happily. Scamming every benefit going. 2 kids taken off her, but allowed to have another... a toddler who is left the play in the road (i nearly ran him over when he toddled in front of my car, poor little angel, i was lucky to be pulling in to park. It could have been a very different story)That child was then taken off her as she was hitting him and abusing him. Anyway, she came home with the most sweet and lovely tan staffy, called her Rosie. And through Rosie she helped turn her life around a little. The she starts hanging around with some dodgy guy, gets pregrant, addicted to drugs etc, and the poor little dog is left outside (on the front, not in the enclosed back garden) but just left to fend for herself. We'd had altercations with them due to everything else, and her boyfriend broke into our front door and hit my Mum's boyfriend. We couldn't risk stealing Rosie out of that hell hole too (heart breaking as it was as a family of dog lovers).

When ever she was in the house we could hear her being kicked out, and she did the same with her new little boy too. She got pregnant again and the council moved her elsewhere. for her benefit of needing a bigger house not the hell she caused us. She wanted to breed Rosie. Rose had been bred from at a very young ages before she found her so why on earth you'd make her go through that again i never know. i miss that little staffy and still wish we'd just taken her somehow, she was the most affectionate dog i've ever met, and the reason they are firmly on my list of dogs i'd love to own!

Staffies are cracking dogs, and i hate seeing them dragged through the gutter the way they are.

Makes me very sad and angry. Hence the epic proportions of my post!

Hence why dog licencing was stopped, its not workable and the people that we're talking about here,Bred dogs anyway without a licence.Everything would need changing to put this in place.

boomslang i agree with you on it being goverment run rather than the RSPCA.
i agree with what every one has said, something needs to be done about this. the RSPCA offer free neutering for staffies an staffie crosses but no the scum wont do it as it stops them making money as they dont care what happens to the poor dogs once theyve been paid.
wish i had the room to go and rehome one of those dogs but we already have a rescue jack russell an a rescue jack russell x chiwawa an my jack russell i rehomed form someone who did not want her anymore. the jack russell we had since i was i kid came from a rescue center we had her for about 17 years

Signed......another thing to consider also, are the people that buy from them. and the only way i can think of stopping that is if the "legal" breeders did`nt charge so much.
when i was looking for my dog(a boxer)...the prices ranged from a few quid from the "delboy" breeders to just short of a grand from "legit" breeders. so they have a responsability also.....

ps..im also going to post it on some other forums im on.

thing is, i don't even understand why they think they can make money from staffy breeding?

the breeder we got a newfoundland from charged around £1200 per pup (which came with a lot of vetting/getting to know us etc etc before she was happy with us having one - and 20 years of pictures of our previous newfs). She says she thinks anyone who takes up breeding dogs as just a hobby on the side is MAD! she says there is hardly any money in it! She makes money by showing and she shares a dog grooming business with her daughter. The cost she charges covers vet bills, admin type stuff, looking after them and mum to the best possible standard. So how on earth do hobby backyard breeders (as in the nicer ones who do care for their dogs not the dodgy wannabe puppy farm types) expect make a bean selling pups fairly low, and eventually giving them away.

This is very very very true ...

In the 80s I bred Siamese cats 'for fun'. These were blissful years and very rewarding, but no way did I make a profit or, forewarned by more experienced breeders, did I expect to.

It's the totally inexperienced people, thinking of breeding animals, who see $$$ in front of their eyes. I suppose in a huge business then money would be made, but if you are a small concern and love your animals and are prepared to vet homes carefully, there is a lot of fun although no money. If no love or concern but just thinking of easy money, then recipe for disaster.

Staffies are imo, specialist dogs - physically strong, needing a lot of training and amusement, affection and attention, and if this can be provided, they're brilliant. Sadly their appearance and the negative aspect of their temperament attracts idiots who see them as an accessory. I do speak from experience. Not the dogs' fault but the owners' ...but the dogs, or any other animal in these circs, suffer ...

ps - and in the largest concern it goes without saying that the animals SHOULD be loved and respected.

You can make alot of money,if you pick a high selling bred, not something thats flooded the market and costs £1.50 each.alot of reptiles are the same, yemen chameleons lay like 50 to 70 eggs, thats alot of babies to sell on at £20 each.where females are even harder to sell on.Now take into account food for each one, they eat alot when young,Lighing/heating etc.Theres no money in that or very very little.
people overall are stupid, and only see $$$.
