hey everyone! I know this is a royal python forum, but just thught i'd ask...

I've got a friend who, like me, keeps big burms and has just told me he's recently been keeping his on straw (as in guinea-pig bedding)... I just wondered if this is safe?

I told him I was pretty sure straw is quite flammable and under viv conditions this could be a high fire risk? He's told me its not a problem but i'm still not sure. His main reason seems to be that straw is a 'helluva lot cheaper' than aspen / coco-fibre...

Any help or advice will be gratefully received, thanks all!

Snakes did used to be kept on hay and straw; with the alternative of modern beddings I'd prefer these as hay and straw can harbour dust and mites (I don't necessarily mean snake mites but all sorts of mites which 'mite' or might not be irritant.)

However the new horse beddings such as megazorb and aubiose are much cheaper than commercial reptile substrates as they are sold in large bales - imo a good option for big snakes or households with loads of snakes, may be trying these myself eventually, and less messy to store than straw too (I speak from experience, having kept hens, bloody straw!)

Wow if you've got a horse you'll know all the local equestrian supplies who will supply aubiose - I envy you! Apparently it looks just like aspen but costs a fraction of the price. Megazorb you have to buy online I think - Mystra on here found a link -

sorry Bats, I meant i've used it in the past (not got him now) but thanks for the link/tip, there's a country store where I used to get his bedding so i'll try there or use Mystra's link if I have no joy. *big hugs* :)
