Now that I've had her for a few months I've ended up with a few questions that have left me puzzled...
1. Since getting her, she's never missed a feed. Always strikes, moves to head if she hasn't already and then downs it. Once she took it from the wrong end but swallowed nevertheless.
2. On day one she did the classic 'ball' in my hand. However she hasn't at all since then, in fact, I can't get her to stay in a ball if I want to. Always stretching and moving.
3. I take her out on a regular basis for up to an hour. She's constantly moving and is very inquisitive, when I put her back in her faun she usually pops her head out again before I can close the lid.
4. She's not at all head shy, after a few minutes of being out I can touch her all over her face, lips etc.
5. She always seems to be out and about, only going in to her hide for a few hours a day.

I realise that these signs are usually by no means a bad thing but considering that her behaviour seems to go against every single stereotype on royals I'm wondering if I'm giving her abnormal conditions or something?
Hot end 32 degrees, ambient around 22, fed every 4-7 days and she sheds perfectly every month. And I turn on my lights in the morning and turn them off at night.
So do I just have an out of the ordinary but fine royal with an outward personality or is she displaying unnatural behaviour as a result of unnatural surroundings? |

All looks perfectly normal to me. Thing is what you hear and read is always the worse cases folks tend not to post my royal moved today or it ate lol.
As for the balling thats a good thing it wont balling is a defense mechanism so is obviously not feeling threatened by you.
we have 2 like that, and one like the worst case :D

| Yeah that's pretty much like all of my royals, I only have one that balls up and almost all of them feed all the time and I have 4 or 5 which are always active :P |

| Not sure I have ever seen mine ball. but a small comment, fauns are not good for royals as generally they are too open and very difficult to control the humidity |

That's very helpful guys, thanks. Yeah I guess I never thought about hearing only the bad news, only seem to hear about snakes fasting and not appreciating being handled. @Markmifsud, thanks for the advice, I'm upgrading to a Viv at some point in the near future anyway but so far I don't have any problems controlling my humidity, in a way the vents means that I can easily lower it by closing the bedroom windows and easily raise it by draping a towel over the faun.
Cheers anyway, it's definitely not ideal hence the upgrade. |

my 3 royals have had no issues with fauns whatsoever. shed fine ate fine went walkaboutfin e.
There is nothing wrong with using fauns for young royals |

| Yep sounds all good to me. Even Duke my very shy guy is quite comfortable round me now. Though he pulls the Scaffold pole rather than ball, You try manovering a 4 foot snake out of a 1.5 foot door when its stretched out straight, lol, daft monster. He is however fasting at the moment but he is a boy and its expected but before that he ate every single time without fail, not a striker but eating is eating. |

my Chancho is the same, and has only just started to miss odd feeds (this is 2 in a row at the moment) but he loves to be stroked under the chin, and isn't head shy at all (unless you made a sudden move).. he doesn't seem to know what balling up is! He's always peering out of his rub at me or the TV having a nosey of everything!
It's nice to hear good stories about royals, not just the negatives about feeding etc. Like others have said though this is mainly due to if something is wrong, people will post about it as they need help... if everythings fine then you don't feel the need to post about it so much - although its great when people do :D shows they are just as capable as being a fantastic snake and they don't always deserve their 'hard work' reputation! |

we have only had drogo for 2 weeks but i can relate to almost everything you have said.
drogo is still alittle head shy and hes not very active during the day or night tbh
temp on hot side 31.4 at the mo

| Its very similar for most forums, you mostly get to read the bad stuff. I am a moderator on a Mercedes forum, and if you was looking to buy one, you might think twice after reading what issues some people have with their cars. The problem is, when your enjoying your car/Snake and everything s just great, you dont make a new post every day saying, wow, what a great day I had today. |

My son only got his snake on Sunday, since then his Royal seems to be getting more and more confident with handling. It isnt balling up any more and has been a bit more active in his viv over the last few days.
Reading the many stories on these forums I was starting to get a bit concerned about his first feed and the first time he sheds, but seeing a thread like this makes me feel a bit better. First feed this weekend, fingers crossed. |

| All the best with him - sounds like he's doing fine. Yes, as others have said, it's the problems that tend to get discussed on a forum (understandably) and the successes aren't mentioned as much. Plus with a new royal (or any kind of animal) it's a bit like a new baby, high anxiety until you get used to the routine (I can still remember my first weeks with Shahi!) Another thing we keep saying on this forum is - they are all different. And oh boy they are! |
