Hi Guys Well Oscar has finally shed for the second time after a pretty disasterous first shed. I fed him on Tuesday and when I went in yesterday there he was looking beautiful and shiny with a huge piece of skin draped over his branch. There were a few odds bits of skin around the viv, but most of it had come off in one. Yay!!!!! I am soooo pleased, and he did it all by himself in 3 days, so proud of my little man. Just thought I would share as I am so chuffed and it's such a great feeling to know I'm getting everything right and he seems to be happy. Thanks for reading. |

Thank you. Just a quick question. I am thinking about getting him a larger viv. At the mo he is in a 3ft, and I was going to get him a 4ft, just because I have a lot of plants and vines and stuff in there, which he seems to enjoy, but it also means that I only have room for one hide. I would ideally like to have one at each end, hence the 4ft viv idea, but as he is doing so well, do you think I should just leave well alone? |

Well, I know the usual choice for royals is the 3' viv, but just before I got Shiva, Shahi, who now weighs 1200g, was going mad in his 3' space (because of the mating season I reckon.) Shiva came with his own 4' viv, and after seeing that, I decided to get Shahi a 4' viv too. The girls seem utterly content in 3' vivs but it was clear to me that Shahi did need more room, and he's definitely been more placid since his move.
I don't know your Oscar of course, and they're all different, but my experiences of giving royals a 4' viv have been good. Also they do like a hide at each end. If you can afford it, why not? (And then you'll have a spare 3' viv to fill lol!)
A move might knock his appetite off for a week or so - that's royals for you, but he might be planning to fast anyway so I wouldn't let that worry you. However, Shiva, despite a change of home and a sojourn in a temporary viv until I had help to set up his own viv, never stopped eating.
They are all so different, but I do like the idea of 4' vivs - but that is just my personal opinion of course. |

Hi Thanks for the replies. I really want to get him a 4ft, but don't want to disturb the harmony we've got at the moment. He isn't huge, he weighs just over 1000g and is about 3 1/2ft long (ish) really hard to measure him!! I just like the idea of him having more space and obviously two hides. Thanks again guys, will keep you posted. Oh yeah, and I like your idea about the spare viv BurnedAtTheStake, hadn't really thought of it like that but sounds good |
