Damien has now not eaten for 6 weeks :-( how long does this fasting stuff last?? He hasn't lost any weight maybe few grammes nothing to shout about and he seems himself just not hungry :-s

It can last as long as 9 months - I have a couple of royals who have fasted around the same time as your Damien - I offer food every fortnight but apart from the odd surprise feed, I don't expect them to really take an interest till next spring ...yes, they rarely lose much weight and they're fine, other than not eating.

I look upon it as a kind of hibernation; they live on their fat as their minds are on mating; come the spring they'll start feeding again. It's normal royal behaviour - although a bit nerve wracking for us. Damien will start feeding again when the time is right.

Hi, MarkSue, my male Shiva's still going strong but the two girls and my other male are definitely into fast mode.

Ha - that's great!

Yes, they'll sometimes take a surprise feed and that's good, feels like something just to keep them going; although they can fast for months with no ill effect, it makes us feel much better!

yeah indeed im a happy guy now lol especially cause i fed him a mouse when had no rats and he hadden eaten since so least i no he happy to go back to rats!!!
