As Slinky is just 3 months old he's in a plastic faun measuring approx. 18"just room for two hides and a water bowl.

It sits upon a heat mat which is too long so the faun stands on half.
Hot end is 78 degrees and the cool stays at room temperature 22C possibly a little higher.

Slinky seems content as he switches ends throughout the day, and when handled shows no sign of stress. He ate his first feed without any issues. that was 2 days ago, no poop yet when should that appear?

Like I said in another post, i'm gonna be a nervous wreck lol

do you mean only half the faun is on the mat? temps should be 31c hit end an 28c is for the cool end. is the mat on a thermostat?
when younger the can poo maybe once a week but when adult that can sometimes hold it for 4-6 weeks

Ideally you want to get the temps to mid to high 80's where it is at for now is a bit on the low side.

royals dont go toilet very regular and can take upto a month to pass the waste.

The mat is placed vertically and the faun horizontal so half of it sits on the mat. The remainder streches out. There isn't a thermostat..would that bring the temp up?
I had thought that without, the mat would reach its max temperature and that never gets higher than I stated.
If he was cold, wouldn't he stay in his warm hide?
When I look in, he's often in the cold side.

what you using to monitor the temps?

And stats are a must, im trying to find a post on one of our other sites where the plastic faun melted due to the heat from an unstatted mat.

I have a thermometer (sp) attatched to the side (warm end)so the bottom, specially beneath the coconut would be higher...right?
I'll get a stat next time i'm in Elgin.

what kind of thermometer strip one? if so that is prob not the best guide for temps, Digital thermometers are the only ones that should really be used and they would be placed in the hot end in the substrate. If it is the strip thermo that is only measuring ambient temps not the temp on the substrate as mats only really heat on contact and do not raise ambient temp of the faun so it is possible the temps are too hot for the snake in the warm end.

Does the mat feel warm to the touch if you put your hand on it.

Sorry I misread your question..its a glass thermometer..filled with alcohol instead of mercury..like used for tropical fish.

I'm using newspaper for substrate..and the mat feels just warm to the touch, never hot.

you are measuring the ambient temps not the actual temps. Try putting your hand on the mat and holding it there for a few minutes does it heat up to be hot, our temps are about 36 deg normally so shouldnt feel hot if it does the mat is way to hot and that temp will be transferred to the fauns base, not where the temps are being measured.

IS best of you also get digital thermometer when in elgin next also.

I have pressed my hand on the mat, and his paper and it never feels hot, just warm.
I will get two digital thermometers one for Slinky and one for Gimli.

Thanks GMac and you too Chris for helping me tonight..feels like I havn't slept since we brought the pair home a week ago.
