Ok so I just got him today, and he seems desprate to climb onto his bulb guard. But I found it to be really hot. Is it because the bulb is touching the guard (it doesnt sit right, iv tryed to fix it its just making it worse) or is it just gonna be really hot anyway. Sorry if this is a stupid question I just dont want him to get burnt. He also cant reach it well and keeps falling from quite a hight, is this going to harm him?? I put in a branch from my corns viv for climbing if thats what he wants, but he hasnt shown any intrest at all. I just really dont want him to hurt himself

the guard will be hot if the bulb is in contact with the guard as the heat from the bulb will travel directly to the guard. where abouts is the bulb touching the guard, the bottom or sides?

there is a gap between the bulbs i use and the guards, the guards still get warm but you can still leave your hand on them for a good while.

i wouldn't be overly concerned with him falling, one of mine used to climb up and try and wrap around the guard resulting in a thud. she stopped doing this after a while

Ohh dear - they are awkward little gits aren't they?

He may not have seen a bulb guard before and be curious. The novelty will wear off. Plus I know what you mean about the damn thing touching the guard - have had problems with this myself. Eventually, as the whole affair gets hot and the plastic relaxes a bit, it will hang straight (I'm assuming at the moment it's hanging crooked and touching the side of the guard, rather than being too long for the guard and touching the bottom.)

What you could try, in the short term, is a bit of thin wire, inserted into the guard and round the bulb. This is fiddly, and when you've secured the ends, you'll have to push them into the guard to prevent any sharp edges from catching the snake.

This is just for demonstration and the wire needs to be tighter - hope pic is clear enough - wire is on right of guard. Bend it round before you thread it in and with a bit of fiddling it will come out where you want it.

Things we do for our pets eh??

I feel realy bad but yeah I think the guard may be too small for the lamp. Iv dropped the temps down a few degrees for over night then first thing tomorrow morning im going to make a big home made mesh guard around it untill the shops are open and I can get a proper guard. If I put a few layers of it an inch or two away from the guard I have and make it so there are no gaps for him to be able to climb around it, it will do untill I can sort it out properly?? I feel like an idoit!! How would I not have enough commen sense to relise that what I had just wouldnt work right? All I can say in my defense is that all the snakes iv had before only ever needed heat mats which I understand how to work. When I looked for info on guards all it said was to have one to stop the snake being burnt, it didnt mention that if not done properly the guarx can have the same effect

just make sure the mesh is strong enough so that the snake can't crush it.

take a bulb with you to make sure it fits the guard. you might have to also change the brand of bulb as different brands are different sizes. i had trouble finding a 250w ceramic bulb to fit the guards

No need to feel bad - you've done your best and these things happen. It's also the law of sod and petkeeping that this sort of emergency always happens when vets or shops are shut!

All the best, hope you sort things out and have a good Christmas.

You may find also that the bulb is running much hotter now than it will be once everything in the vivarium settles in, heats up etc. Once everything is up to temperature which can take a few days (including the vivarium itself) the bulb will just be on very softly maintaining that temperature. You can barely feel the ceramic bulbs running in my vivariums as everything is nice a warm its just keeping it that way with a very small amount of heat.

i think the guards i use are pro rep ones, they take the 250w ceramic bulbs i use so would imagine they would fit your bulbs. i don't have a pic of them but they come in black or white plastic coated, the wire is fairly wide compared to some i have seen with small holes about 4mm square

I think mine are - got them from blue Lizard, but BL don't seem to stock them any more.

Surrey Pets do a ceramic guard that is longer and wider than the standard IR guard though. However in a smaller viv this is likely to come down just about to floor level.
