| hi, i really am desperate for help, i have a 3.5 month old royal, we got him at 2 months, was told he was a good feeder on small mice, ive had him 7 weeks now and he has only eaten one mouse, i have tried the usual braining, hair dryer, soaking in blood etc, ive covered the box, fed at night. all temps and setup is correct and he will not strike or even acknowledge the food is there. he is quite active but as soon as food is put in he goes in his hide and stays there til its removed. he weighs 64grams which i think is underweight. i just dont want him to die!! plz help any suggestions are welcomed. thanks |

you may want to try assist feeding although ive got no experiance of this, another member should be able to advise you on this. have you tried him with rats?
or try putting a tiny bit of marmite on the mice/rats nose |

| no i havent tried assist feeding yet, im gonna try him on rats and see if that makes a difference first and go from there. marmite?? not heard that one b4, thanks |

Hi, you'll see on Blackecho's weight chart above that he's not underweight, but 3.5 months is a bit young imo to be fasting - if he was an older boy I'd say it was normal at this time of year - my cf10 male was 6/7 months when he began to fast in his first winter although he's the only hatchling I have experience of.
Is it possible that your supplier could have mistaken his age and he's older than you think? It has been known, and being off his food could be normal for him, as it is for most royals at this time of year.
Also, when did he feed last? If he's missed say, 3 feeds since that first mouse he took with you, even very young royals can do this and you don't need to worry yet, but I'm with Chris, imo I can take an older royal fasting in my stride, but I don't like to see a hatchling going too long without food - however, how long is too long? This I don't know, but when Shiloh, one of my corns, arrived, she had fed well at the shop but went off her feed. I did some research and established that it was as well to try assist after a month. She was a tiny little thing too. All went successfully and she's now a tiger for her grub.
Amendment - If you do decide to assist, is there someone you know who could help?
There's rather a debate about assist but all I can say is, this is what happened with me.

| You say your setup is correct. What is your setup like, as much info as possible. It's likely to be a problem with settling in which 9 times out of 10 means the set up is wrong, not so much wrong as not eight for that particular snake. |

are you the same person who posted on the reptiles and exotics somerset facebook page?
i only ask as if you decide to assist feed but have never done this there is a shop in locking that would probably be willing to help you do this if you phoned them and explained, but i think they are shut at the moment over the festive period. i have never assist fed before but if i have i would have offered to do it for you as im in somerset.
im with lotabob though your set up may not be quite right so we may be of more help if you give details of your set up
