I dont know how much my royal weighs but from what ive been told he hatched in about april this year and he takes 1 weaner rat every 8 days, does that sound about right?

Depends on how big he is. The rule is feed nothing thicker than the snake and feed 10-15% of the bodyweight providing it doesn't break the first rule. Best bet is get some scales.
I think a lot of people (me included!) use this feeding guide:
Blackecho's feeding guide - feed 10/15% of the snake's weight. 0-400g - feed every 5 days 400-800g feed every 7 days 800-1200g every 10 days 1200g+ every 14 days
He was hatched in April and is already on weaner rats at 8 months old?! Wow he must be a chunky monkey, mine is on weaners and he is two years old (ish)
