Thanks Blackskull - hey, been doing more reading and, although I know carpets are Morelia like GTPs, I didn't realise they can perch like GTPs and can even be interbred with GTPs - does this make them a chondro rather than a boid? (Sorry if I'm way off here but I understood royals and boas to be boids, but GTPs to be chondros, now wondering about carpets.) It was fascinating, meeting Sulah for the first time, as she's got those buggy cat eyes and the same head shape and jawline as a GTP - but according to my reading, her care requirements aren't that much different from a royal's - whereas a GTP's care is immensely more complicated.

Fascinating, moving further along the learning curve ...

i must admit im not you stumped me with that so hit google lol

from what i could find chondro is just a nick name taken from the old latin/scientific name, Chondropython viridis but they are now Morelia viridis. the name just stuck. so im guessing they are boid (i may be wrong)

yeah not much difference in husbandry. i keep my hot end a bit cooler than the royals at 30 and keep the water bowl at the hot end. she has got one hell of a feeding response too, the fasted striker of my snakes by far

Ah, thanks - been fussing with temps a bit as she's on her own in the back bedroom where it's cooler and I've been worried as to whether temps are high enough or too high( though at her size she's got loads of room to thermoregulate - as far as I know, she's in the middle hide, a kitchen roll inner buried in aspen - was going to start her on kitchen roll then found she is a burrowing snake, hence the aspen.)

Hey, don't know if you've seen this vid - carpondros!

Yes, true - those little things are going to live 20 years or more and need a place in a breeding programme or a committed pet home (though who could resist those naughty little heads trying to tag!)

But certainly needs to be some thought as to what becomes of the results of these experiments ...

I agree Bats and although there is more than one argument for and against Hybrids especially if they are fertile, but I think It's a quick way of introducing new morphs into a line and make a few quid quickly, but that's just my sceptical opinion lol they were nice looking heinz 57's though

Weren't they just ...wonder if they'd need a gtp setup or a carpet setup - seems there's quite a difference from what I hear.

Looking great Bats just wondering though is it a "normal wild type" or does it have some interested genetics? as I have seen some nice morphs of the carpet python?

Thanks Reptilemadd - I'm assuming she (I call her 'she' as you're supposed to be able to get a rough guide to gender from spurs and she hasn't any) is a normal - I have seen some very pretty morphs but the black and white pattern seems to prevail, but that may change as she matures - they can develop richer colouration but don't mind if she doesn't, she's fine as she is lol

Perched!

Have left her in peace all night, just crept up a few times to peek round the corner of her viv, but had to get that shot ...hope she's settling in and liking her new apartment.

Ah, thanks, hope she is, just rechecked on her and she's still up there in a bundle, remember my first corn hatchlings doing the same thing on their climbing branches lol, two and a half years ago, but you know how it is, always fuss over a new snake settling in, no matter how many you have, there is always the same magic ...

You and Lucy might appreciate this ...I'm actually typing this with my laptop resting on my other laptop ...Emily the cat lol, very settled and very obstinate ...that thing's moving before I do ...the laptop is very small and light by the way, unlike the Emily ...

I missed this as well. SO JEALOUS I'm considering a carpet python for my big Vivarium though I have a few options at the moment including a lizard of some sort (beardie or water dragon).

Looking forward to lots of pictures of this one progressing.

Aww the right one will come along, Bob - I was so disappointed the other week when the deal fell through with that royal I was buying, but if I'd bought him, I'd never have been able to buy Sulah - a clear case of things happening for the best. I just happened to be glancing through preloved on Friday afternoon (as one does) and the ad for her had only just gone in. I don't often see them for sale, and this one was only 30 mins car drive away from me. I couldn't believe nobody else had snapped her up.

Yes, loads of pics to come, you know me.

Yup - here's another one.

Cy didn't eat her meal today and it's about the weight Sulah's been on, so ...didn't fuss her, just offered and ...

Hmm...says Sulah, might eat again at this hotel ...

A little update on Sulah.

The night after her feed she came down to her water bowl, climbed in ...and soaked.

She was still there at 6am. The bowl's in the warm end so she wouldn't be cold, but I wondered if it was good for her to be in water so long. She resumed perching during the day - she has never used her hides ...and that night got back into her jacuzzi once again ...

I did of course check for mites, and thankfully there are no signs, fingers crossed.

Yesterday I got her out to check her and change her water - and her eyes were opaque. Ah! That was why! I'd been wondering if IJs liked to soak after eating, but if she's shedding, that explains it.

All the same, I put her water bowl in the cool end this morning, while she was perched, and arranged a damp hide in her warm end.

Then I did a bit of research, and found this -

http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/snakes/630213-carpet-python-soaking.html

Carpets soak. They just like soaking, it seems, and that is that.

If she climbs back into her dish this evening I will just replace it in her warm end and let her do her own thing.
