I currently use a 250w ceramic heater which is covered by a heat guard as you can see in the picture below. What i am concered about is if i touch the guard on the sides its warm but if i touch under it it burns my hand. Altough the snake cant touch the blub it can still reach the guard and im worried if it curls around it it could burn the snake. Is there a solution to this? I have never seen the snake touch it but that doesnt mean it doesnt at night and it concerns me.

Hi, it looks to me as if you could do to shorten the length of flex between the light fitting and viv ceiling. It is the correct guard for a ceramic by the look of it - you should be fine then.

Sorry - amendment - yes, as Chris says, it will need a stat unless statted already.

I found this is the case, can take days to get everything sustaining a good temperature but once it does the thermostat will drop the bulb to a heat that is just maintaining the temperatures. You say it burnt your hand, it probably didn't though not like touching the bulb would, it gives you (and snakes) time to react to the temperature and move rather than instantly burning the skin.

if its still getting the viv up to temp you could turn the stat down a little then slowey turn it up to 32c over a couple of days if your worried about the bottom being hot or as bats said shorten the wire so its a little further up
