Lol - when I fitted my first dimmer stat I was just the same as you. Totally confused! Microclimate have a lot to answer for!
In accordance with the instructions, I dutifully drilled a hole in the viv roof and fitted it, hanging in mid air ...
Actually it did work very well and it was hard for the snake to interfere with it. But now I ignore the instructions and attach it to the bottom front panel with a screw eye and cable tie, about a third of the viv's length away from the hot end side wall, a couple of inches above the substrate. Other people like to install it in the hot end, directly under the bulb, or in the hot hide.
I still can't get over those weird instructions ... |

As long as you use the thermometer reading to set the stat as long as its getting the right temperature then anywhere would be my answer. I put mine directly under the heat bulbs just on the substrate, has a few draw backs but no system is totally fool proof. |

I drill a hole about 2 inches above the viv floor, in the side wall at the hot end. Also, when the probe is positioned like this, the wire isn't obvious.
amendment - this is just my personal preference - as Bob says no system is foolproof and mine is not corn-proof - the mucky little gits always let fly on the probe flex. But you won't have that problem so much with a royal. |

I have a hole drilled into the back about an inch above the viv floor to avoid any leaking should they let fly a epic wee near this area, I dont fancy scrubbing overflow off the floor behind the vivs. |
