Hi all do royals ever take a break during their fast to eat? Im sorry if this sounds stupid but Kane has eaten two small mice in the past couple weeks, last one being about a week ago... I was told to try him on a small mouse cause he might take it cause its "easy" prey so after him taking two of them (not on the same day) i thought id try him on a weaner rat, which is what he was eating before he started a fast but he didn't take it although it did look quite big so i left him for a few days and just tried him again today on a smaller weaner rat, i weighed it and it was roughly about 30g and 40g is 20% of Kane's weight.

Fussy little bugger!

Yup - they do snack from time to time, awkward little gits lol. You never can predict what a royal will do!

Ok thanks guys the little bugger got my hopes up when he ate them mice, it was a brown rat this time and he seemed a little interested so maybe if it was a white one he'd have eaten it? He's so fussy with his rat colour! I dunno... He's a pain in the neck! Lol

Duke took 2 fluffs during his 4 month fast, maybe the urge to breed takes a day off once every few months.

Should I try something smaller again? I dont wanna risk him getting addicted to mice, he was only on rats a couple of weeks before he started a fast

It's a good idea I think - in my experience I've found they do respond to smaller rats when coming out of fast. Then once you've got them going they will eat the right sized prey. Spring is nearly here - good luck!

Ah ...well ...I'm no expert in this; furthermore I have various smaller rats that are more suitable for colubrids and which need to be used up before the next bulk order. So atm I'm offering fasting royals (who'll normally eat a small/medium rat) anything from a 45g weaner upwards; if it's refused; a corn or pit will take it. If the royal takes it, at least that's something in its belly; if I've got another rat defrosted I can also offer that too and I do find they seem to be tempted by a smaller size prey for some reason. So it does tend to be whatever I have to hand and not a specific size. Sorry, not very scientific lol!

If you have to go out and buy the critter, I'd say, try a size down from what you'd normally feed until you're sure the royal is back on eating form. Saves a bit of money too.

Our corns are on mouse fluffs so that's no good... Lol what's the size down from weaner rat? He went straight from mice to weaners so I don't really know the sizes

It's rat fluffs - or fuzzies - but weaners can be all sizes. I have some 'small weaners' that weigh just over 30g - an XL weaner can weigh nearly 100g and looks almost as big as a small rat.

Rat fuzzies weigh approx 19g according to one of my suppliers, roughly equivalent to a medium mouse.
