So after noticing Monty go into blue last week, I put her some moss in her hollow rock to help her out, as she had a bit of a rough time on her last shed.
Got up this morning to find a lovely full shed and a very frsh faced Monty looking proud of herself. Only problem is, still no poop!!
This has been going on for a while now, I've not seen a poop in around 6 weeks, and only 1 urate in that time too. She's still eating every week, so I've not been TOO concerned, but she hasn't been too active recently, which has had me a little worried.
What are your thoughs?? With what frequency do your young Royals leave you "little presents"? |

Mine poop weekly or every other week.
But, I had experienced one of my baby royals not pooping for over a month since she first started eating. Urates yes, poop no. What got me concerned was that her belly got really firm and "fat" looking which made me think that she was impacted. I took her to the vet and sure enough, she had a blockage which caused her to retain all that poop. The vet was able to empty her out and then I just had to keep observing her. The vet said that he thinks the baby royal did not develop sufficient muscles in her tail to be able to purge. Sure enough, a few months later, her tail fell off!!! In the meantime, I had to squeeze her butt area to make sure she doesn't have any poop blocking the way.
So, yeah, there's a way you can tell if your snake is getting impacted. Just feel the lower 1/3 of his body and see if you feel firm "logs" there. It's kinda like the way you can determine how many eggs a pregnant royal is carrying...
Hope this helps! |

Wow, Anatess, that sounds horrific! Poor little guy! Never experienced anything like that myself but royal erm, movements, can be very sporadic in my experience; you simply don't know what to expect.
I have had royals shedding and not emptying themselves until a few days later. And oh boy it stinks (yer average royal is the 'highest' pee-er in the realm ..) |

I've not noticed any ridgidity or bulges to her lower body, but will give her a good feel tonight. She still does that thing where they suck their bellies in when you run your finger down the length of her.
Will inspect her viv a bit more thoroughly tonight, might even give her a bath if she's looking confident enough this evening. |

Weekly! Wow, Duke goes every few months. He isn't impacted or bloating etc its just what he does and its common for Royals to not poop for long periods. Even my Boa only goes every month or so and it does them no harm at all. |

I was starting to get really worried that Kane was impacted or something similar because he hadnt pooped for weeks then the other day i lifted his hide to find a "little present" somehow up his hide wall...! He might just be waiting to leave you a "big present" lol |

There seems to be some mixed results with this! Lotabob - I've Googled allsorts to do with snake poop frequency, and I'm getting everything from weekly, to every other month!! So I'm really pleased yours only goes every few months, hopefully Monty is like yours!
She shed last night / this morning so I've had her out tonight so I could try and feel for bloating - but nothing, no obvious indication that she's impacted or anything. I took her for a nice warm bath earlier too thinking that might kickstart a "movement", but nope!
I've started a log (no pun intended) tonight, as I now have two Royals to remember details about, so will be keeping weekly weights / lengths etc - and poops! Hopefully she'll go soon, fingers crossed. |

He makes my dog feel inadequate. |

Yeah, it is all different. I thought at first that it is the type of feed that accounts for the difference, but I feed multimammates and so does some other people I know and mine go weekly or every other week while others go longer than that.
Now, here's the interesting thing - ALL of my 6 royals do the same. But yeah, they don't have those mega giant poops! (That poop picture out there is like... EEK!) Just regular smallish poops.

Duke's effort isn't unusual - here's one of Shahi's. They're about the same age and this was probably taken at about the same time; peak royal feeding season; they're eating their fill and, being in good working order, they're well ...going great guns ...
pretty magnificent eh? |

EEEK!!!!
Waaaa... my royals will never win this competition. I wonder if it's my set-up that causes them to poop smallish poops. Maybe if I move them to the UK they'll hold it until they get a good size to bust out. Hmmm... |

Some can store for a crazy amount of time, my male fire has only gone 3 times since August last year, August 10th, November 17th and February 4th. |

STILL NO POOP!! BUT, I might know why now. I've been under-feeding her, it seems. She weighs 420grams, so according to the 10-15% rule, she should be on mice/rats weighing between 42 and 62 grams. I've only been feeding her 25 grams for the last month, and before that, probably 18-20 grams. I fed her 2 mice this weekend, a large and a medium, which combined weighed 52 grams, so I'm hoping that gets things moving a little.
Seperately, Monty was spending very little time in her hot hide, I'd say less than 10%. The cold hide is only around 20-22degrees on a night, so I've been worried about her developing an R.I. I've been testing the temps of my heat mat (ranted about in another thread) and found that, unstatted, the surface temp is just way way too hot, but the ambient temp barely gets above 22 - hence her spending all her time in the cold end.
Now I've got the heat mat statted and set to 32 degrees C (to be binned next weekend for a ceramic setup), she's spending the vast majority of her time in the hot hide - ideally I'd like to see her using both ends, but rather a little too warm, than much too cold.
I'm hoping that a proper amount of food, plus raising her temperature up, will kickstart her system and get her going again. Other than the lack of poops, she seems healthy and happy enough - enough to strike feed two mice one after the other, put it that way. A little lethargic the the day / evening perhaps, but who knows what she gets up to when I'm in bed
Watch this space (for poop)!! |

She sounds absolutely fine to me. And your setup's going to be perfect soon - and snakes know how to thermoregulate.
Lethargic? Royals are famous for it lol! And for keeping their crap in long-term storage. |

The reassurance is comforting
I guess I just worry when an animal can't communicate with me to tell me something is wrong, so I assume the worst. My other snake (Ifrit) is her complete opposite, he's quite grumpy, very active on an evening, and very "masculine" - he stands his ground and often hisses at me (no striking though) I lifted my little inquisitive cat up to have a look at him through the glass last night and Ifrit was actually coing right up to the glass so they were nose to nose! Talk about cocky! |

Lol - they do - Shahi came as a hatchling, very shy, and was communing with the cats long before he bonded with me. One of my cats thinks the snakes are her especial property, even though her name is 'Mouse'... |
