Snake Mite

Hi all,

I hope somebody can help, I'm worried about my Zaphod.

I have a Royal Python, a year old. He's been with us since September and is regularly eating every week, never been a problem feeder. We had humidity issues and his first few sheds were incomplete, so he did need bathing and a little help but it was nothing serious.

I upped the water bowls in his viv, and made him a moisture chamber from a margarine tub and some red sphagnum moss, with a small hole in the top for him to enter and exit. I keep the moss wet at all times, and place the chamber in his viv when he's in blue to help him out. There are plenty of pieces of bark for him to rub against too.

A week ago he went into the first phase of blue, and then out of it a couple of days ago. I got the chamber ready for him and put it in his viv. Since then he's been back into blue and he's not really been out of his hide much, but then I don't watch him 24/7! He didn't take his mouse this week but I left it in overnight and he did eat it. I know sometimes they don't eat when in blue so wasn't worried anyway.

The thing that worries me is - I just went in to check on him, and his eyes are back to normal, and his head has obviously shed. But the rest of him is still really rough and when he moves around he's all crackly with the dead skin still on him. Is this an incomplete shed (the worst one yet  ), or has he just not finished shedding yet? I don't know what to do with him and I'm really worried!

Also - why is the humidity just not raising? We have a humidistat but it keeps showing at 20-40% even when it's steamed up after he's been to the loo so this can't be right - maybe I need to invest in a new one? I don't know what else I can do to fix the problem! Also, if he's still feeding every week is that an indication of good health regardless?

Please help or tell me what I can do! I was expecting a shiny new snake skin on him today and now I'm just confused and worried :help:

Thanks

Judi-mae

Ah poor guy. This works well - and is not stressful for the snake.

Hi Judi-Mae

is the hygrometer a digital one? If it is, try changing the battery. Mine did the same (within a month of buying it) and a fresh battery sorted it out

hope you manage to sort the bad shed out, I'm looking forward to seeing some shiny snake pics soon

Also its no good putting a damp hide in after they have gone blue, its to late by then. Try keeping one in permenantly.
