I am thinking about getting another python and have been scaring myself by reading up on I B D,as I have had my current Royal for 25 years it would kill me if anything happened to him. Has anyone out there had any dealings with this disease and how commen is it? |

I thought IBD was a boa thing That a royal can catch it from and is deadly to it |

as far as i am aware boas are the main carriers of IBD which is fatal to both boas and pythons, killing pythons quicker than it would in boas. i did read a good article on the net about it but can't find it.
its certainly out there but has to how common i don't know, how many breeders of both species will admit to having it and destroy their living (although im sure it would get out if a breeder did have it in their collection)
to be sure of minimal risk you could buy from a breeder who solely breeds royals then quarantine it for 6 months (this should be done any way with a new snake)

IBD is very uncommon I definitely wouldn't let it put you off getting a pet, however any new reptile you get should be quarantined from the others anyway :) IBD is more an issue with buying a new boa as pythons with IBD generally die too quickly to pass it on but boa's are almost undetectable with it. |
