Hi there. My snake Sas shed about 3 weeks ago. Came off in bits but the last of it I managed to get off with water. I cleaned out his viv on friday and his humidity went up to 80. It normally ranges between 70 and 75. Yesterday when I got him out he had something white on his eye. I can only describe it as what looks like a cat's third eyelid! It is at the back of his eye. It doesnt seem to bother him but it's sudden appearance has worried me. I cant put up a pic as I dont have a camera at the moment. Please help!

It's impossible to say for sure without a pic, but this could be something as simple as a retained eyecap starting to peel off and it might do no harm to try this -

It certainly won't stress him, especially in this warm weather.

Did you find both eyecaps when he shed? I know this can be nigh impossible; my lot are brilliant at mislaying their 'specs' and I once got really caught out when Surahi shed her 'mask' but not the little bubbles over the eyes.

The cap beginning to peel off might give the impression of the white rim being in the eye - but if there's no improvement, and any doubts at all, might be a good idea to contact a reptile vet and get him checked out. Good luck with him!

If it was an eye cap would it just suddenly show up after all this time? His eye looked completely fine before. Ive only had him 2 months ( he originally belonged to my son, who has had him since just before Christmas. I was looking after him while he went to Afghanistan) so Im a complete novice!

I'd take him to a vet, if only to put your mind at ease :)

Ah, your first post said he shed 3 weeks ago - was thinking the eyecap might have been retained then, and has just begun to peel - it can happen.

But yes, as Janie says, any doubts, do consult a rep vet, even if it's a false alarm, money well spent.

(As I usually tell the vet admin staff - 'Hope I'm not bothering about nothing - well I DO hope I'm bothering about nothing ...) Lol.

All the best with him.

Its true she would LOL

If there has been an increase in humidity and there has been a bad shed it seems logical to assume first of all that a piece of unnoticed stuck shed has come loose due to the increase in humidity, whether thats an eyecap or just a piece of skin near the eye which has been nudged over the eye. Dont be scared and have a good look, touch it and see if it comes off.

The concern in this post for me would be your normal humidity readings, they sound high, I would only be looking to get humidity that high during a shed. Also as you had a bad shed it would suggest that reading is wrong. Do you spray the vivarium?

My normal humidity is 70. I did spray when he was shedding but not since. The bark I put in on Friday was quite wet and the humidity seems to be stuck on 80 although it is no longer steaming up in there! I will get him out and have a good look at his eye. I have a reptile shop near me that is very good so I might take him there first and see what they say before I find a vet. My vet for my cats doesnt do reptiles! Thank you all for your replies.

well I took Sas to the reptile shop this morning. Bloke there looked at his eye with a magnifying glass and said it was a piece of stuck shed. The other bloke in there also had a look and agreed with him. Both said it would come off with his next shed. Phew! What a relief. Sas has now gone back to bed in disgust at being woken up and prodded!

Ah that's good - thought it was but with not seeing Sas in person couldn't be completely certain. Good luck with his next shed.
