Hi,
My daughter is soon to be the new owner of a baby normal Royal Python, we would like to make sure we are correctly set up before we get him/her, so my apologies for the rather long first post. Our set up will be as follows: 36x18x21 viv, a 100w ceramic heater plus guard, Aspen bedding(fine), a medium sized cave and med half hollow log, med water bowl and feeding dish, a combined thermo and hygrometer and plenty of fake ivy leaves and branches.
We are very excited at the prospect of owning such a beautiful animal and really want to get this right so if anyone has the time to have a look at the above and give us any comments on cave sizes etc. it would be greatly appreciated. As the viv will be in a south west facing room, we are not sure if we need artificial light or not, the room is bright even on winter days. Thanks in advance. |

If you dont mind me saying i would also put a few more hide areas in the viv it might be abit big for a baby royal you dont want to stress the snake out with a big open area just put lots of decor in the viv whilst its young and gets settled in so your new little one feels safe and secure and as fezza says make sure you use a pulse thermostat with your ceramic bulb and a bulb gaurd so the snake wont wrap around it and burn its self. The natural light will be fine royals dont need alot of light. Hope that has helped and welcome to the addictive world of reptiles. |

you might find that a 100w ceramic is a little under powered for a 3foot viv |

i would agree with this. im my experience i found 100w ceramics struggled to reach temps especially in the cooler months. all my 3ft vivs have 150w ceramics and they don't struggle even in the cooler months |

Thanks guys, I will uprate the ceramic, is 150 ok or should I go to 200w? Everyone I tell we are getting a royal (apart from those who just don't get snakes as pets) say we have made the right choice and judging by this forum I am so pleased we have done so, can't wait. |
