I origionally had my dimming thermostat probe next to the thermometer probe directly under my guarded IR bulb and had no problems at all reaching and maintaining my target temps. I was however concerned that if the snake moved or covered the thermostat probe that the temps could rocket causing a dangerously hot environment, so I decided to clip the cable to the side of the Viv leaving just the thermometer probe under the heat source, but for the past few days I have been setting the temp during the day which has been maintained but at night the temps are going up and up.
I think that as the probe is clipped to the side it is In direct line of cool air being sucked in through the gap where the glass door meets the Viv, so as the air in the house gets colder at night the probe is telling the thermostat to work harder, has anyone else had this problem.
Hope this all makes sense
Thanks

I havent had this problem before, but you could maybe try a lower wattage bulb so as to limit the maximum possible temperature?? I'll be interested to see what suggestions everyone has. I am in the process of ordering my Thermostats, only ever used a bulb before, so it would be good to see how to avoid this when I get mine too.

Good luck.

I had this problem when first set up my viv so moved my probe directly under bulb then i got worried about the same thing you did all I've done is cable tie my stat and thermometer probes together and left the excess cable tie on rather than cut it then wedged this under the feeding dish anything with a bit weight would do and this stops it moving im hoping he doesn't hang around on them long enough for it to get dangerously hot

If they cover it and it gets too warm I'd hope they'd be off to the cool end to cool off pretty sharp letting the temps sort themselves. Sounds like yours definitely needs placing somewhere else though.

You can try to place probe right in the middle of the viv, far away from snakes hides. By doing this you will be sure snake will never stay on the probe for too long as they don't feel to safe in the middle of the viv.

If the probe was in the middle though you sure,y wouldn't get the correct hot end temperature.

no it doesnt matter where you put the probe for thermostat as long as you have a reading for your hot end temp wether you use a digi/dial thermometer or a ir temp gun you set the stat to maintain that temp its just easier to have it closer to the heat source i guess

You can put the thermostat probe where ever , that just controls the heat source you need the thermometer probe under the heat source and set the thermostat by the reading on the thermometer . I have pointed the thermostat probes down towards the floor rather than at the door and there is less of a variation in temps, I will monitor this but may go for a complete change at some point.

Your better lying the probe flat rather than just the tip touching the substrate

After much trial and error , I have found that unless I place the thermostat probe directly under the bulb, the cooler night time ambient temperature in the house causes the thermostat to kick out more heat, which in winter would increase. I have gone back to the original position, under the heat source and I would like to think as some of you rightly pointed that should my Royal ( Marley ) lie on the probe causing the temp to rise, it would move before temps got dangerously hot.
Thanks for your input
