Ok....so I've got a new viv (30") and have fitted my ceramic fitting and guard. Next question from you guys in the know is this, I have got my pottery type hide to go on the cooler end of the viv, but will this sort of hide also do for the hotter end? Wouldnt want it to crack with the heat (being in close proximity to the heating source), and am worried about the fire risk of one of those wooden hides. Sorry to sound a dumbo, but life in the Rub seemed so much easier!!!! By the way, got a Microclimate mini stat to go with the ceramic....trust this is ok????? |

Depends what type it is,most are clay fired,so will be fine under the heat. You going to cut a hole and stand the pot upright?

I have afew wooden hides,no fire yet

Not really no,unless its the 300w version.Even then it will turn your bulb on and off.A pulse or dimmer is far better, and will hold your temps alot better.

As Boomslang says most clay pots have been 'fired' in a kiln and hopefully your hot end will get nowhere near those temperatures.
As far as wooden hides bursting into flames I would suggest this is unlikey as even paper requires a temperature of over 400 degrees F to ignite, if memory serve me correctly, so any wood would be considerably higher than that. |

Yeah they won't burst into flames, you can always use a pot on one side and whatever on the cool side.If you're that worried about it. |

Np Are you sure its a Microclimate mini stat? you really need to make sure,as it could be the 100w version.
You need to change it for a dimmer/pulse stat if it is.

Technically a mini stat could run a smaller wattage ceramic BUT it will destroy it quite quickly switching it on and off. Pulse stats do this but not so slowly that the bulb heats and then cools over and over, it holds it at temperature so it doesn't strain the bulb so much. A dimmer goes one step further and dims the bulb with a variable constant supply of electricity.
Personally I prefer dimmers, it leave the option of using light emitting bulbs should you so wish with that stat, pulse stats dont give you that option, they are also incredibly accurate (so are pulse stats, cant knock them either). The draw back to dimmers is they buzz, not really loud but when you have a vivstack with 4 on the back of it you can hear them in a quiet room. |

Thanks for your help guys. Yep, it was a 100 Ministat....said on the packaging it was suitable for ceramics....so I bought it (will now stick it on E-Bay (lol). Have gone out and bought a pulse stat as you suggest, so things are slowly coming together! Oh....saw a really beautiful Mojav in the reptile shop today........hmmm........ |
