Hey guys got my first royal python today the pet shop wasn't very helpful at all thanks to this site my Monty's life has probably been saved...i have a question however the occasional scale on the snake is "sharp" is the only way i can describe it my thought was it has had a shedding problem and the Cloacal (i think) has what appears to be thorns on either side coming out is this normal? :S |

Well i got 2 huge viv's off my mate for £80 with a load of hides substrate and 3 large heat mats so got a bargain there however the only thing the assistant said was.."have you ever had a royal" they only told me when and what to feed it had to do a lot of the research myself and he's fine atm think he actually likes being out of his tank roaming my living room most of the time lol but no they told me nothing about how to keep.
i have 2 hides in his viv along with a large water bowl and i did have a heat mat however when i got home from work last night he was on the heat mat and was hot to the touch so i switched it off i have to go down and buy a Heat light which they didnt tell me either other than that he is healthy apart from the worrying spiky scales almost feels like there lifting off him, if that makes sense :P |

Nice,What kinda heat light did you end up buying?Do you have a stat to?
Also you say the heatmat was making him "hot to the touch" are you measuring the temps with anything? |

Either a red bulb or ceramic bulb are fine.Don't buy a light emitting bulb, like a white light basking spot. |

Don't forget a bulb guard, and can you see any shred around his nostrils or any discharge from his mouth?Listen again for squeaks, whistles, pops or clicks etc.If you are hearing that,it sounds like he has a respiratory infection.
It can come from incorrect care,But you haven't really had him that long.So sounds like it was sold to you like that.
You really need to get him checked over at the vets, and id also get in touch with the shop, and explain the problems to them, seeing as you haven't had him that long. |

Ok thats good,if you have the mat on a stat,it should keep the temp within range all hours. Not go on/off for two hours each time.
Also how large is he/she? any idea of weight to? |
