Hey guys, just joined the forum! iv had my first Royal Python Hatchling today from the local pet store. I already have two corns, so a royal seemed like the next step for me.

Any tips, or advice would be much welcomed. The guy in the pet store has three Royals, and was very helpful regarding my new hatchling setup.

I using a Large Faunarium, Aspen Substrate, Thermostat, Thermometer, Heat Mat.

Pretty similar to which i have used for both corn hatchies previously, the guy in the pet store said this would be fine for a royal hatchling, but i would appreciate any further advice you guys could give me.

I understand that Royals grow pretty fast, so how long do you think before i transfer him to a 3ft ViV?

Another quick question... The guy in the pet store told me not too worry too much about the humidity for the hatchling, he said that they need around 50% humidity which he described as around the general humidity of a room anyway. I have also read that the Faunariums can be terrible for raising humidity.

Is a hydrometer essential, as the guy in the pet store didn't seem to think so.

Also, with both my corns i was advised not to handle them, or feed them for the first week, let them settle in. Would you think this is the same for the Royal. I did pop his second hide in earlier, and he was hissing, and striking, i would assume down to nervousness.

Thanks in advance

P.S. I'll post a few pics once he's settled in and handling.

Hello and welcome,

I would move him out of his faun once he has reached a length the same as the length + width of the faun.

Yes, you should leave him a week to settle in, some are mega tame and dont need it, but yours obviously isnt lol. He will be fine after a week. This is the hardest period, all you want to do is play with them!!

As for humidity, a hygrometer isnt essential, but you will need to raise the humidity when he is shedding. My royal is rubbish at shedding and needs much higher humidity than my corn. I do have a hygrometer in his viv just to keep on top of this. Normally a moss box and daily misting does the trick while in shed.

Have you got the heat mat inside the faun, or under it? i would use it under the faun to prevent any burns. Even though you have a thermostat the royals larger body can block the heat (thermal blocking) from a heat mat causing the thermostat to think its cooler than it is, and thus turning up the heat.

When you move him into a viv, ditch the heat mat and get a ceramic bulb, 150w for a 3ft viv. You will need a lamp guard and a pulse proportional stat as well.

Hope this has helped, dont be afraid to ask if you have any further questions.

or 100w depending how hot your home is :P pulse or dimmer is fine to.

Overall i wouldn't worry about viv setups just yet.Get him feeding and settled and happy where he is

Hi, welcome and congrats on getting your royal

Johnny has nailed it in one. The only thing I'd add is, don't lose the plot when your snake goes off food. Patience is the key

Thanks guys, yeah I can't wait to handle him, handled him lovely in the shop, he didn't seem nervous, myself and my girlfriend handled him fine, but I guess the new environment, as well as a noisy three year old doesn't help there. Hope he settles in ok. Do you think the noisy child could stress him? My corns don't seem stressed by my lad, but I suppose there used to him. Just hope the new arrival gets used to him too. I'm sure there will be lots of questions within the coming weeks, thank you all for the warm welcomes :-}

Snakes cant hear anything, so in short, no. lol

Excessive vibration is the only thing that could stress it out. Apparently having a viv too close to a tv can cause bother. not too sure how true that is though. As long as you dont have some massive subwoofer rattling his viv their shouldnt be a problem.
