Hey Guys! I thought I would be best making a thread explaining all of the boundaries for the monthly competitions that are run here.
As most of you all may know, I have taken over the running of these competitions as they went a little unrecognised and people didn't seem to care for them anymore. I wanted to add a little to the competitions by getting them up and running again.
Here are some of the basic competition rules
- Each competition starts at the end of each month (depending on how long it takes to get a theme) and each competition ends on the 22nd of that month which then allows up to the 28th for voting. Plenty of time?
- Each competition now allows up to 2 entries. This can either have:- # 2 Photo's # 1 Photo 1 video This can NOT have:- #2 Video's This makes it a lot easier for voting.
- Video's can also be edited however you like to make is as cool as possible (you can add music, introductions, ECT)
- Both Images and Videos must be of YOUR snakes and must fit the theme of that month, if they do not fit this then they will not be included.
- The images and video's in the competitions are allowed to be around ANY Python snake, whether it be a rock python, carpet python, royal python or even Reticulated python. All pythons are allowed. (Corn snakes and other species are not allowed)
Rules for Voting
- Video's are voted upon separately and Will follow a different competition but I am starting it off here.
- You are entitled to 2 votes, 1 Vote for images and one for Video's.
- Voting is registered by IP address and If anybody is caught voting more than twice, I will take all of their votes off.
- No voting on your own image or video! This can be found out also by IP.
Other Information
- Some of the themes are very specific and may be limited to what can be done, If you cannot take part in one of the competitions, there will be a feedback area on the webpage where you can rate the theme and even leave a comment.
- Themes may be interpreted in your own way!
I hope these rules will help you in future competitions and good luck in all of them!
(If you can lock this thread, that will be Great thanks!) |

Quick couple of points (will delete this post at the end of today)
1. quote: Video's are voted upon separately BUT if the highest video votes does not beat the highest number of image votes, the person with the highest image votes will decide on the next theme.
Doesn't this mean that if there are 10 photo entries and 4 video entries, the photo winner may win with a greater percentage of votes but not a greater number. I.E. you can get a greater percentage of votes for either video or photo but have less total votes? Do you get what I mean? I don't think I've explained it particularly well lol.
2. quote: must give me all of the specifics of that theme (for example, you say Games, what do you mean? (Indoor games like games consoles or outdoor games like football or tennis)
I always thought part of the fun of the theme was being allowed to interpret it any way that you want. For example, a while back the theme was dinner and while there were many feeding shots, some smart person put his royal on a dinner plate with a knife and fork lol. Same goes for the steering wheels one... remember PC Penelope? Personally all the times that I've won I sometimes choose a deliberately vague theme like 'Reflections' as opposed to simply saying, 'A photo of your snake with a mirror.'
Just my two pence... great work with the competition so far! |

I think you've done a great job with the comps Hayden but I think now they're becoming more than just a few fun pics of our snakes. Your organisational skills with it all has been great but my own personal opinion is that it's easier and fairer to just keep it as 1 unedited photo per entry. I'm not trying to offend or anything like that.
Not everybody can make videos or edit photos. I think a theme like games would mean any and all type of games. Be it video, indoor, football or anything like that.
If anybody disagrees/agrees I'm happy to hear their opinions. |

@Frambo, Video's have now changed and will be run under the video's page where there will be competitions for Just Video's :)
Also (this goes to both of you guys) fair enough with the specifics of the theme, I understand where you are both getting at with creativity and all so I decided to scrap that idea of giving specifics. ;)
One good thing about this thread is that I am getting feedback on the rules ;)
Also, I would like to keep it at one edited or unedited but the edited cannot affect the view of the image (the image may have a slight light tint but not much more) as long as it does not affect the main point of the image I thought it would be ok. What do you guys think?
Finally, These competitions are all about fun and not about the competition, people here understand that (from what I have seen) I don't think people would feel bad if they lose because it is all for fun but I don't know exactly. |

lol it was me that posted Slinky on a dinner plate, as the theme was 'Dinnertime' it wasn't off topic. However as far as specifics go, I do think there should be a parameter. In that I mean if something is required take this month for example "flowers & music" the photo should clearly show the required element. |

So the video comp will be a completely separate comp?
Yeah parameters are good but on a theme such as games or outdoors I think that would be any kinda game and anywhere outdoors. I'm just saying I think the competition should be as it was and just fun for all :-)
You have done a great job at organising it all though Hayden. |

To keep it available to all members the rules should reflect the different levels of post production photographic skills that members may have. Keeping it unedited keeps things simple and fair on those who don't have editing facilities. Keep it fun, simple and let the subject of the photo be what it is judged on and not how many bells and whistles have been added, airbrushed and fiddled with.
I'm going to knock together a few simple techniques for taking a good photo of snakes, Something to be added to by everyone as to how they do it from the basic point and shoot digital camera to the all singing all dancing digital SLR kit, share techniques and then we will all be super snappers and editing just wont be required |

I don't know where I stand on editing. Both times that I've gotten the most votes my photos were just taken on my phone... then again my phone rarely requires editing while my Nikon often does even though it's a far superior camera.
Possibly something like if you've edited it you have to mention that when you post and say what you did? |

I can edit images, but I feel that's taking it towards the professional photo shoot. You can do amazing tricks with digital photography. I reckon leave it as its always been, editing forbidden :)
1/ No editing 2/ You may NOT vote for your own entry |

Aye same Frambo, I take better shots with the new DSLR (Who knew?) camera but they all require the brightness turned up to make them great. |
