Stephen Crockford Hello Janie thanks for volunteering for today's interview
Janie Watt Your'e welcome, its a pleasure
Stephen Crockford Lets start at the beginning and find out exactly what got you into reptiles or exotics
Janie Watt Well I first handled a snake about 20 yrs ago, it was my former fiance's brother's Reticulated Python..they draped it over my shoulders
Stephen Crockford Wow big snake for a first encounter
Janie Watt but what really got me started was my daughter constantly asking for a snake. We always said no
Stephen Crockford Why was it that you'd always say no?
Janie Watt I don't know really, we hadn't even considered snakes at that time. then I mentioned it to my Auntie 103 yrs old and she took the money out there and then lol
Stephen Crockford How long ago was this?
Janie Watt Last Christamas
Stephen Crockford Brilliant auntie lol
Janie Watt We collected Slinky on my Birthday
Stephen Crockford Slinky is your royal?
Janie Watt Nah, Katana's..she got him early
Janie Watt Oh and I got Gimli, sameday
Stephen Crockford Gimli is the beardie?
Janie Watt Yup, the one and only..Steve named him Gimli for the beard Dwarves are awful proud of their beard yanno
Stephen Crockford Good choice so what does your collection consist of today?
Janie Watt oh crikey, now you ask lol let me see.. Fea was next, he was my Xmas pressie from Steve..Feanor the Dark Elf
Stephen Crockford And fea is a..?
Janie Watt Oops sorry, Fea is a Mexican Common Boa..or my Furby I love that little snake to pieces..totally spoilt and adorable
Stephen Crockford Very nice snake Anything else?
Janie Watt Yes..next came a baby Ghost Corn snale, Casper
Stephen Crockford And next?
Janie Watt Casper died after a couple of weeks, he nevaer ate, so Andrew from the store took him back to get eating..but he died
Stephen Crockford That's a shame
Janie Watt Next came Ra, the Taiwanese Beauty Snake..he was a straight swap for Casper
Stephen Crockford I'm a personal fan of Ra
Janie Watt He is a sweet snake, and ate last night in 15 seconds
Stephen Crockford Record breaker
Janie Watt hehe just to add, Steve just got a snake out..cuddling him as I speak
Stephen Crockford Do you have any idea what snake is next on your list? Or reptile even Or exotic while we're at it
Janie Watt I don't think there will be Kelf, 5 is our limit to handle them all daily I'd love a Bosc, but with our lifestyle I don't think it's possible
Stephen Crockford They are high maintenance tis true
Janie Watt and i'm damn sure Popeye the African Grey wouldn't be impressed Even Cookie as you lot helped name loves a cuddle..Cookie the Carpet Python Stephen Crockford Its clear you love your reptiles and safe to assume they're pets to you - what is your opinion of people who keep dozens or hundreds even as part of growing collections?
Janie Watt That is a good question..well I don't like to hear of snakes being bred purely for profit like a puppy farm Then if nobody bred these gorgeous animals, I wouldn't have any. So I reckon as long as they are cared for as they deserve, I have no issues with mass collections
Stephen Crockford That's a good way to look at it I think, what about particularly large snakes - burms, conda's and retics - do they have a place in the regular family home?
Janie Watt well my ex had a large Retic in their house and i'd like a large Boa, but Fea is the only Boa for me That didn't answer your question..so yes I think they are fine in the home as long as shown respect Respect as in common sense required..not with young children and dogs kept away
Stephen Crockford The mind boggles on how much room you'd need for a monster snake. Do you think the way the general public perceive monster snakes in small vivariums is damaging to our hobby?
Janie Watt The general public and snakes, I think its any snake. I doubt many think about the size of snake, to many they are all monster snakes Be it a hatchling grass snake or a adulf reticulated
Stephen Crockford Do you find people react differently to you once they discover you keep snakes
Janie Watt and no, not really, last time up the garden had Fea out on the lawn, so called my neighbour to look lol If anything they are more likely to visit to see the extended family
Stephen Crockford Haha what did she say?
Janie Watt not alot, she never does but her face was a classic
Stephen Crockford Haha brilliant well we're drawing to an end here so is there anything you would like to say or ask before we finish?
Janie Watt you havn't mentioned the cheeky one, the venomous monster hehe Poor liddle Henry, how could you forget the real baby lol
Stephen Crockford This would be the little hoggie that bit Steve recently?
Janie Watt yeppers hehe the one and only 'Horrid Henry'
Stephen Crockford He sounds a character
Janie Watt his is a strange story he was in the shop back when we bought Slinky..he was going mad in his tub to get out that's nearly a year..and every time I went back I asked to see him, and everytime Andrew would say not a good idea as he bites He doesn't bite, he digs and that hurts..he didn't bite Steve either..I prefer to call it 'Holding hands' tho Steve don't agree
Stephen Crockford Haha I bet! I find the aggressive ones are always the most fun
Janie Watt ooOO he's not aggressive, poor pet was just hungry lol
Stephen Crockford So he tried to eat Steve
Janie Watt Cookie is setting Steve's touch screen tablet on and off playing Lazy Snakes I believe
Stephen Crockford Intelligent snake
Janie Watt he's really settled in..never bites now
Stephen Crockford So you're sure there are no more reptiles in the future to be added
Janie Watt well..nothing planned ..just yet cept I would like a Bosc, and the Common Boa is that shop
Stephen Crockford Well thanks for taking the time to talk to us if there are any questions for Janie I'm sure she'll be happy to answer them in this thread
Janie Watt You bet, I love talking about my snakes and thankyou for talking to me Kelf, I loved every moment
Stephen Crockford No problem Janie was fun
Janie Watt *smiles* |
