Rat pups have better nutritional value but both are fine. As they get bigger though one rat will be a enough but you'd have to give mabye two mice at one feed and sometimes it's hard enough to get them to take one! The earliest you can get them on rats the better. I want to get mine on rats but the problem is getting hold of them, my local shop had large ones which were way too big but no smaller ones so I'm still feeding mice. I don't know what he's going to make of a rat yet. |

As ddm10 said, rats have a higher fat content which is better for royals, the sooner the better. |

the main issue with whether to feed mice or rats is more to do with what they'll eat as they get older. you don't want to have to feed an adult royal 10 mice per meal when feeding a rat is easier, more appropriately sized and nutritionally balanced. so it's better to get them onto rats asap. |

My baby royal has had six feeds in the six weeks he has been on the planet. Is now eating every five days. YAY!
He has had 5 rat pups and one fuzzy sandwiched in the middle. What do I move onto feeding him next, in terms of size, or is multiple rat pups best?

Sorry for hijacking this thread, it just seemed appropriate whilst reading through old posts looking for tips.

Rat Pups to Rat Fluffs (or small Rat Weaners). Try and give your snake 10-15% of its body weight for a feed. So if it weighs 100g, 10-15g of rat. Rat Fluffs/Very Small Weaners start at around 20g. |

I think that the feeding response is better with a mouse because they reek to high heaven. Defrost a rat in a freezer bag then open it, smells a bit but it's not too bad. Do the same with a mouse and JEEEEEEZUSSSSS!!! They can't resist.

So I should stick with a rat pup every 5 days until he weighs about 200 or so? |

Not sure how much Rat Pups weigh, I'm guessing around 10g, which is about right for his current weight. |

Yeah they are about 10 g. Weighed them last night. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, with him being only 6 weeks old but just wanted to know what to feed him next when he has grown up a bit. Thanks |
