My 10 year old boy came home with a double sided homework sheet, to do with latin. I have not got the foggiest. If i had any hair i'd be pulling it out.
Question 1: Write 3 words that have a prefix and the latin segment tain. Write the meaning of this segment and the meaning of each word. I haven't got a clue
Come on somebody must know this gobbledy gook, who's intelligent? |

He's certainly not studying latin, he's only 10 so would think it's probably english words with latin origins. As the only clue they give is that you can't use mountain or fountain as although they end with tain they are not seperate latin segments, they come from the french language. |

Ask me one on science and I could help but latin is a bit beyond me. If he can get hold of a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary (big one rather than pocket sized) they have the origins of the words next to the definitions. What about Wiki? |

Try typing tain words into an online dictionary like for example maintain. It says were the word comes from for example this one is from the french. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/maintain The two examples are from french so surely thats one. Just type in different ones and see if they are also from the french. I don't actually know what I'm talking about now! |

Thank you, have used this link, hopefully we've helped him. If not and it's wrong i've told him to tell his teacher to look up this thread on the forum, never know he might get some bonus points for the sheer fun of it. lol |

The question did ask something along them lines, but also said not to use mountain and fountain as they are not latin. So how would you know whether sustain, maintain and retain were latin and not french etc. Anyway he handed it in without answering that part, and his teacher said everybody in the class had failed to understand how to do it. If only she knew how many other people didn't have a clue. lol |

I missed this (not been on the forum for a few weeks) but -tain is latin for to hold/ grasp. Examples with the suffix -tain would include obtain, contain, retain etc.
