Since I've just ended up trying both of these back to back, I thought I'd let you know my findings.
In the red corner the defending champ: 100w Euro Rep Red Night spot.
In the erm... other red corner the challenger: 100w Exo Terra Heat Glo infra-red.
The red spot was what I'd been using originally, but I decided to try an infra-red thinking that there would be less visible light. My first thought on opening the box was that the glass on the infra-red was much lighter red than I expected. Once installed, it was also noticeably brighter than the red night spot and made my living room look like a bordello! "Ah well," I thought, "the temp will have dropped while I had the doors open fiddling with the bulb, it'll go down in a bit." After an hour it was still burning my retinas but the temp was down to 25c. I whacked the thermostat right the way up and it still struggled to reach 29c.
So, more ratching in the viv and the original Euro Rep red night went back in with the thermostat turned back down to where it was before, and within 10 minutes the temp was back up 31c and it no longer looked like the room was on fire.
I know other people have had good results with these though? |

Maybe its an Exo Terra thing,
there heat mats have been known to catch fire...
I just got a Komodo red bulb...the one i am using in Quetzas viv is a bog standard one..and it is fine...
Can i borrow the one the other one..
Just kidding on the loan by the way before Lee or Paulus make any wise cracks.

I use the 75W Infrared heat bulbs and they easily heat to 32C and above. |

That's what I was expecting BE. The bulb itself is marked 100w infra-red, but it seems to give out a lot of light and not much heat. Perhaps I just got a bad one, but at £6.99 a chuck I'm reluctant to order another just in case. |
