I don't feed the snakes anymore. It's been months now. The kids and my husband do it now. I did it the first few months just to make sure the kids learn how to do it properly. The first time was tough because I wasn't a snake-lover then. I've always had hamster pets and I was one of those people that would grab a shovel if I see a snake and try to chop it's head off.
But, I've really learned to love these creepy crawlies. So, feeding them is just an extension of that. I mean, I feel real terrible for the rats, but, I understand it's necessary for the snake's health, and you learn to appreciate the law of nature. You also learn to appreciate the snake's natural hunting instinct. That's why I opted to feed live instead of using the CO2 bag for the royals. They are much better at it than I am, that's for sure. The hognose is a bit different. When I first fed him, I cried my eyes out! He doesn't constrict, so it took a LOOOONNNNGGG time for the rat. So, the CO2 bag is definitely MUCH better than the hognose's venom.
One thing though, you can't look away before the snake gets that rat fully constricted. A lot of things can happen and you have to be there to intervene if needed.
Thanks Anatess...
the looking bit was the bit with the C02 chamber, not with the snake constricting it...
I would be okish with the snake doing it...
though i never watched Kaz with the multi pup...
i would with an older one, i think it is awesome how they kill them...
my only problem with all of this is the rat did not chose to be bred into this world to be killed for us to feed our snakes..
i cant word what i am trying to say, guess i feel kind of guilty that something had to die because i keep snakes...lol.. |

Sorry, I realized what you were asking so I edited my post. I wasn't quick enough with it though!
You know, I'm pretty sure I know exactly what you're trying to say. I've had that same discussion with my husband. What he told me is, everybody who owns royals feed them rodents. Whether it came from a store in nice little frozen baggies or from their own rat colony, there's really no difference as far as the rat goes. And, there's also no difference from our carnivorous pitcher plant who eats insects. And, there's also no difference from the hamburger we just had at McDonald's. But, the main difference is, with our own rat colony, we KNOW the rats are well taken cared of and that they have good quality lives.
I don't know if that makes a difference... |

You could think about that in a differant way. If you didnt breed it, it wouldnt have a life. So is it cruel breeding it for a purpose or cruel not breeding it at all? Is it better to have a short good life or a short miserable one?
(I have almost started debating with myself ) |

yes, or i look at it this way, if i dont feed it to a snake then it lives its life out to the full..
I think the reason i am finding this hard is because i used to rescue rodents..
what was you debating?..lol.. |

I LOVE ADAM WYSOCKI! This is my favorite of all favorite ball python feeding videos of all time. And he touches a bit on that dilemma we both have Anne! |

Today I was thinking about how I justify keeping pets (odd I know..). Then I thought the only pet I can really justify keeping is my cat. She doesnt have to come back, can can leave any time she wants but chooses to come back. |

Ok do you want same size chamber as mine??? mine is a (9L tube) Also all my fittings are based on the Halfords Co2 and there Regulator so my fittings will only fit halfords stuff wich you will have to get as i can not send the Gas in the post
You will need
