Hi I have recently treated my snakes and viv for mites with beaphar insect spray. Brilliant stuff and I can still not see anything inside or on the snakes. However the wood and hindings I have are still yet to go in. Im unsure if this is a good idea. I was thinking of putting the wood in the bath boiling kettle and just filling up the bath and leaving the wood in overnight. Do anyone think im do the right thing or im I best of placing the wood and hindings in a freezer if this kills eggs. Which would be the better idea? Im really unsure but the last thing I want is for them to come back again. Any advice please Debs x

Hi Debs

There's a sticky here: http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1320 about the treatment of mites which recommends baking the wood at 160c for at least an hour. I'm not convinced that freezing will have much effect, you're better off using the oven.

I would personally bin anything wooden. Freezing, baking, etc may not kill all the mites/eggs. You would be amazed at the extremes of temperature that arthropods can withstand. Anything resin based should be ok to bleach and rinse but, personally, I would bin anything wooden.

i would add to it that if you are not already doing so, to keep your snake on either newspaper or kitchen roll for a month...any new nasties are easier to spot.

apparently the life cycle is 5 weeks max, so once you haven't seen a mite for 5 weeks you are clear....

I personally remove the wood, boil clean it, and leave it OUT of the viv until the 5 week cycle is over.
