Hi Guys,
My question is. Where and How do you install a heat mat to a wooden vivarium?
Thanks Ian. |

i slipped mine in through the tiny gap at the bottom and back of the viv. trouble is i found that heatmats were really not that good at heating a wooden viv though. that's my opinion of course. |

i agree with Cat they are no good for heating and definitely a no no when your royal is older as it could lead to burns, heavy bodied snakes do not do well on heat mats...
they are fine for them when they are babies though.. |

most people tend to use either ceramics or infra red heat bulbs (guarded) on a dimmer stat..
i use both in different vivs but prefer ceramics to dimmers...
have not used radiators yet, but GP says they are good and i am looking into it.. |

So would a ceramic heater and a basking lamp be enough? |

just a ceramic bulb, guarded and on a thermostat. you shouldn't need a basking lamp |

I am currently using a UTH and I was wondering for how much longer I can use this method. By that I mean, when should I change that to a ceramic bulb/how old should my snake be for me to change that? Zahara is currently about 3 month old. |

i think mats are fine (if used correctly) for smaller royals! you put it on the viv floor, tape it down, cover with substrate of your choice....... remove the plug, feed the wire through a (?pre-drilled) hole in the back of the viv, re-fit plug, and plug it into the socket.......... even i can manage that........ yes i can wire a plug! |

As above, heat mats are fine under RUBs/Faunariums and for young royals, but not really suitable for older Royals. Are you putting a hatchling straight into a viv, large spaces can really stress them out. |

Gp, What tape do you use to tape it down. Didnt think it was a good idea to use tape in a viv incase it comes unstuck. |

Would a heat mat be required for young royals or would a ceramic bulb be all that is needed? |

a ceramic is fine in a viv, if you use a heat/light source though you need a way of heating the viv when you switch the light off, then a mat can be handy overnight. a young royal you'd be best off putting in a RUB, thena heatmat would be the easiest option
