a ceramic is fine in a viv, if you use a heat/light source though you need a way of heating the viv when you switch the light off, then a mat can be handy overnight. a young royal you'd be best off putting in a RUB, thena heatmat would be the easiest option
If you switch it off. |

for a light emitting bulb it's prolly best to so you don't mess up their natural photoperiod |

if it's unstatted it will probably damage the plastic (i have the proof of this- the faunarium my little corn is in was on an unstatted heatmat with the previous owners- the bottom of the faunarium is melted and warped...) but i haven't noticed any problems with a heatmat under plastic as long as it is on a thermostat (which for your snakes sake- it should be anyway). i also stick a blob or blu-tac in each corner of the bottom of my rub to raise it off the floor a bit to allow some airflow (the fauns i have have little feet to do this, but the rub i have does not.) |
