I fed Richard parker two days ago and i've just got him out for a bit handle. Bless him, he was curled so tightly into a ball and is very dull with the blue eyes. I've other types of snake before so I know its shedding time.
How long is the average time after blue eyes for shed? I'm assuming they clear again then shed? Rough timings please guys, I know there will be some variation.
My is usually 50 but occasionally drops to 40, I'm going to change his cool end hide into a damp moss hide, and possibly spray tank when needed to raise that humidity to about 60. Do I do this from now or wait until eyes clear?
Thanks in advance

it's about a week after the eyes clearing until they shed- that is a rough estimate as you say though. as for humidity i usually just have the damp moss hide in there and dont bother with spraying the viv :D |

Excellent, will do. Moss hide, no spraying. Hope he doesn't do it next weekend as I away and my friend has agreed to check temps and change water, not sure she'd appreciate a shed skin and/or poo.
I'm due to feed again on tuesday, should I still try or leave him? With other snakes i've had I have just waited till they finished. |

The shed should hopefully be in one piece, the poo is easy to clean as it should be quite firm and can be picked out with tissue paper.

Came across this bit of advice on a website:
Once the snake's eyes have cleared, bathh it in lukewarm water for 10 minutes, dry and return to viv. Snake should then shed within 24 hours.
Anyone tried this? |

I wouldn't want to stress a snake (as some will be) out unnecessarily. I have bathed snakes that have been problem shedders, but not routinely. |

Yeah, that was my thought too, it's not broken, so don't try and fix it.
His eyes are clear now today and he looks happier, was such a sorry state when they were blue. I've added some moss under his cool hide now too. Fingers crossed he sheds before I set off to the lakes on Friday morning.
Ooh, while I'm on. My friend, who bought a royal shortly after I did, tried feeding her for the first time last night but got a fright when she struck at the mouse. He dropped it into the snakes water bowl and then onto the substrate, making one messy mouse. He removed it and defrosted another to try her again, which of course, royals being royals, she hasn't eaten. Should he wait the obligitory week before trying again or earlier seeing as how she was wanted the first one. Apparently she was doing her nut going around the tank looking for it. Bless. |

i would leave it now for a week...
lol....that made me laugh....about him dropping the mouse...
i did that the other day when i was trying to video P feeding, i dropped the mouse..picked it up and forgot about him...and very nearly got a load of royal python teeth in my hand....
that really made me jump..but i should know better...
even now though when they strike i still do tend to..but now i read the body language better i know when it is coming...the strike i mean..
i dont feed when they are in shed... i think the feeding response is better if you leave them and there are no risks either .. |

he's shedding now but it is a bit bitty (like the way that rolls of the tongue)
Two big pieces then some smaller ones.I've had snakes before and if that happens I used to put them in a hessian (sp) sack with damp paper for about half an hour then gently peel it off using my thumb. Will that be ok?
Should I do it tonight or leave him a bit longer to try and finish it himself? |

I had a messy shed with sofia this weekend, soak a pillow case then ring it out so it stops dripping, in goes snakey, tie the top & leave it over night. I had to do it 2 nights in a row but it worked perfectly. |

If I have a shedding problem I'd give them a bath in water roughly the temp of the hot end of the viv, the depth of the snake and then let it run through a damp towel. |

Ok...
He seemed to have got most of it off, just a tiny bit left on his head. I've just tried bathing him. He wasn't impressed. I then let him crawl through a damp towel for a bit. After that I had to hold his head firm but gentle, again not impressed. I rubbed the loose skin gently and it came off the side of his face just under his eye and then a bigger piece out of just inside his mouth.
I'm pretty sure but not one hundred per cent that the eye caps are off. How can I tell for sure?
Cleaned him out while I was on. Have all the stress in one go seemed a good idea to me. |

I've just found the top piece of her head from the shedded skin and there is one and a half eye caps on the shed. I've checked her eyes and I assume I would notice if there was half an eye cap still on.
Can't find the bottom of her mouth in shed pieces but it looks clear on her.
Should I keep moss hide in for a few more days just in case?

No harm keeping the moss hide in permanently. |
