Aspen is probably the best, but it depends. Orchid bark is good for raising the humidity and news paper is more practacle

Both males and females have them (they're called spurs), but they are bigger on males.

According to T-Rex (substrate brand), Aspen is best for corns, kings, and milks and is okay for royals. But, twice-milled Cypress, repti-bark, or Desert Snow (artificial substrate) is best for royals because of the humidity requirement. I use twice-milled Cypress right now. It's a darker wood than Aspen, so it is more difficult to spot the messes. So, during spring/summer when humidity in Florida is high, I use Aspen.

Snake owner since Oct 2008, so yeah, I'm no expert.

im using aspen at the moment for my 08 cos having to feed her in the viv. less chance of impaction. i love the look of bark myself. looks really natural. had issues with humidity when using it though, cos i froze it to kill of any nasties then tried to bake it to dry it out but couldnt seem to get it dry enough so chucked it.

the best way to get rid of anything nasty (especially if you live in england) is to bake it as most things live through freezing winters and come back to life when its hot enough.
