Reading differnt links on this site I see that some people are feeding their snakes every five days. My Royal, Gladyssss, is 5 months old and since having her (Nov), ahe has fed regularly every 7 days apart from last week when she was in shed. She is currently on medium mice, but after reading here I am a bit concerned that she is'nt having enough - what do you think??
Also, whilst we are on the subject, last week I tried to feed her a rat pup, which I thawed out next to a mouse. I rubbed the mouse all over the rat and heated it up, but she was not interested. I dangled the rat for ages infront of her, but she wasn't having any of it. I then put the mouse in and she took it within seconds.
Again any advice on how to convert would be appriciated. Thanks

hi there,
feeding is recommended every 5-7 days. Your right in getting her on to rats as when she is a adult 1 rat should be sufficent instead of multiple mice.
the transition from mice to rats canbe a long frustrating one. some may never take them. there is tips in here.

And when adult every couple of weeks should be often enough. |

Im feeding mine (700g) 1 small rat every 10-ish days. I give it a bit of variation between feeding days. |

Good news - Gladyssssssss took her first rat!! I slit the brain, warmed it up and as I was warming it, the dryer was wafting the smell over to the feeding viv where she was sat in wait for her lunch. She must have smelt it as she raised her head and came to the side of the viv to taste the air. When the rat was warm enough I opened the viv and she nearly leapt out she couldnt wait. I was so excited and i thought you might all be intrested to know the outcome. Hopefully there will be no looking back!! |

Well done on getting Gladyssss feeding on rats, i am since being on this forum starting to think Royals are not as bad as people make out, yeah you get some that are a pain to get going, but listening to BE i think it is more us than them and animals can sense when your stressing and i am sure this goes a long way to them not taking food, but then i could be talking out of my butt..lol.
Anyway, well done Gladyssss... |

I got Drazen on saturday and at the shop the owner fed him a small fuzzy mouse, he gave me a small fuzzy for his next feed and three slightly larger ones for his further three feeds. I was going to try feed him tomorrow (saturday) which would be seven days after his last feed. but i'm thinking of trying him on the slightly larger mouse rather than the small fuzzy as the owner said it was smaller than he would normally have. I think i'd feel better knowing that he's had a decent meal. he's 11 months. |

Even hatchling Royals can take Small Mice/Rat Pups, there should be no reason for a Royal ever to need a Fuzzy. |

Bad news I'm afraid - Gladysssssss has decided that she doesnt want to feed this week, after trying all the usual tricks, eg sliting the brain, warning with the dryer and wafting into feeding viv, she still wasnt going to take it. I ended up leaving the rat in her viv over night, only to find her asleep with it this morning. I'm wondering if now that she is on rats that she may not need to be fed at 5 day interval, as she is getting more nutrients???? Or maybe because they are slightly bigger she isn't so hungry???? Anyway have now decided that I am going to leave her till Thursday or Friday which will be eleven days and see if she is hungry then. Am I being a bit harsh???? Not just that but she has taken to sleeping in her tree and when I take her from there she is absolutely freezing. After a warm up she goes back in but again stright back up the tree!!! |

the cool end might be a little warm so there's not much of a temp gradient but shouldn't be a problem if it's short-term while you're cooking |

How busy is the kitchen? - Royals do like their peace and quiet, so the location could be disturbing her.
Also, remember that her feeling cold to you is probably normal as your blood temperature is 37C and the maximum she wants to be is 32C. |

She has been in the kitchen since we have had her, so i dont think this would be an issue - our kitchen is busy, but when she wants to come out and not be bothered she lies in wait knowing that we will be going to bed. then as soon as we have gone, she comes out for her nightly rampage when she nearly destroys the viv, we know this as we have caught her on occasions. feeding hasnt been an issue until now and she has been with us since November. |

Good news everyone - its day 10 of Gladysssss's fast and just tried to feed her but she was not interested. I decided that I wasn't going to stand there all day dangling a rat in the air so just left it in the feeding viv. After about 5 minutes of her having a look around she suddenly did a double take went straight to the rat and started to eat - thank god!! Lets not get too excited though as I now have the dilema of whether to feed her on a 5 or 7 day basis??? She is weighing in at 198grams (weighed last night) so any advice would be fab....thanks. |
