My royal keeps missing everytime he strikes for his food lately. The other day I had to just leave it in his viv for him to figure out!!
I know they can be a rubbish shot and its not much of a prob as long as hes eating but can I help him out in anyway? I use food kitchen tongs at the mo and I wonder whether he can see the sides of them so will get snake tongs and I do heat the rat, but wondered if theres a good technique to help him eventually grab it?! Holding it higher in the air or along the ground?
I like feeding him and dont really want to keep just leaving it in there?!
Thanks k x |

If hes still eating its not a problem, if you try and make him strike you run the risk of anoying him and he will go on a hunger strike. You definatly dont want him getting scared of his food.
How long have you had him? He may strike better when he becomes more confident. |

I have Grace just under 1 week and I treid to feed her for the first time last night. She also missed on the strike and did not bother again. I tried to tempt her a bit and then left it to try again tonight.
Not too bothered at the moment as it is early days andshe is only 8 months old. |

Yes I will leave her for a while as I do not want to stress her.
It will be hard having to wait to see her eat her first meal since I have had her, but it`s for the best. |

quite often if they miss, and hit the side of the viv, or bowl or hide, and hurt themselves it understandably puts them off striking again. whether they just think that the strike hurt or maybe that the mouse has attacked them i don't know |

I have this spider royal - he is one heck of a good eater. Hasn't missed a meal yet and always stikes at the food in less than a minute. But, that booger is such a bad shot! One time, he struck at the butt and ate the rat from the bottom up. Then one time he struck at the middle part of the body and it took him a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time to figure out how to swallow the thing - finally ended up letting go and looking for the head. Then another time he struck at the back of the neck and ate the rat from the neck. That was quite wierd - he managed to eat the rat by "folding" his head into the body and swallowing that way. I figured as long as he eats the thing, I don't worry about how he does it.
