Hiya everyone! Royalty here once again!
As some of you may know, i am getting a royal python next month.
And now, this is were i'd like you to come in - what do you think - honestly - do you think a male or female is better tempered - or not much difference.
I've been told by 2 pet shops that females are placid all-year-round whereas males can get snappy during the breeding season.
And i've been told by someone who studies herpetology that there isn't any difference.
And i've been told by someone who breeds royals, that males are more placid then the females?!
So - i thought i'd ask on here - some help please!? |

i would get a female first...
only cos that will give you a head start on breeding. takes 3 years ish to get a female up to 1500g's where as a male has been known to breed alot smaller (ubder 500g).
so by the time you realise you want another royal and start breeding you female is already on her way... |

But is there any differnce in temperment?
All i know is that females are ussaly around a foot longer then males and more expensive to obtain. |

For a normal Royal hatchling the price is unlikely to be very different if at all.
I have not noticed a difference in temperament. |

Thanks. A think a female will be my first choice but of course, a male wouldn't be bad either.
PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT:
I have asked around in all of these pet shops in Cornwall: Gills & Geckos Scales & Tails Xcaliber Reptiles And i'm ringing a couple in Devon tomorrow. I have also tried online.
And at the moment, i'm having trouble finding a hatchling.
All of the ones i've mentioned above can get me a Juvenile - but it seems impossible to get hold of a hatchling at the moment.
Is it really to early and should i wait or is it possible to get one - and if so - HOW!?! |

Also, would you advise orchid bark as a substare?
Some pet shops say it's toxic to snakes and others say it's perfect.
If it is - could you please give me another idea - i'd like a substare that looks natural. |

You won't find hatchlings at the moment, wrong time of year.
Orchid bark is fine. |

were they trying to sell you a more expensive alternative? it's absolutely fine to use and i have my royal on it. the only problem i've had is that it's too damp when you first put it in, baking it in the oven fixes that though |

It's fine. Just keep an eye on the humidity. I use it in my terrariums for my bugs. Some of them have 80% humidity which holds quite easily with orchid bark. Keep checking your hygrometer and you'll be fine |

orchid bark is fine, sssssofia is on it & I wouldn't use it if for 1 minute I thought it may harm her. Any particular reason you want a hatchling, sssssofia's 2 in May & she's perfect!!! you may find (feel free to disagree guys! ) your baby will be a more established feeder if he/she is 12+ months old. |

I too have a female and she is so placid. OK she is still young, but i don`t think her temperment will change. I would say that as long as your snake is happy, there should be no problem with either sex. I also use a mixture of Aspen and Orchid bark for the substrate. This way I think you get a happy medium where humidity is concerned. |

Dave at T-Pets (used to Snakes n Adders, Leeds) told me the vast majority or normal royal hatchlings will be CF.
normal looking CBs are likely to be a by-product of creating other morphs are likely to have hets and therefore be more expensive/valuble to breeders. CF are so cheap that petshops snap them up and make a nice profit on them |
