purely for decorative purposes, and so i can ACTUALLY see in!
the viv i am working on atm is a standard 2ft beech one with glass sliding doors at the front. it will be situated in a place in my living room that never gets the sun and looks totally pitch black in there all the time and it'd be nice to see in there without it hurting or annoying Ra too much, so...
1)what's the best light to use?
2)should it be put at the same end as the ceramic heatbulb
3)how will it mess with the temperature and will the stat on the ceramic compensate for temp differences when light is on/off?
and presumably it should be guarded too...

If you get a low wattage energy bulb or LEDs then they give off negligible heat and you won't need a guard.

I use red ones of these:

http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue/hagen-marina-aquarium-led-light-systems.asp

They are much cheaper on Ebay though. You'll need a hub too, but you can control up to 3 lighting units from it. They give out no heat and are just bright enough to be able to see your critters without disturbing them.

Mmm red lights and my trips to Amsterdam while I was in the Navy. Sorry, maybe not the correct forum.
I don`t use a ceramic. I just have a 40w spot and turn it off at about 2100hrs and back on in the morning. There is also a heat mat covered with news paper should she feel cold during the evening
