Firstly, sorry for all these questions.
I have decided to go for a 5ft wide, 2ft long and 3ft tall viv.
Will I be able to heat this with a 250w ceramic heater, or am I gonna have to get an AHS 500w heater? Also will the AHS make a big difference to my energy bills? 500w seems a lot? |

For a Royal this seems a little bit on the too big side of things. It sounds odd saying having too much room can actually be bad but for a nocturnal animal that spends most of its life squeezed in burrows such a large space can be intimidating and stressful. I have a 2kg, 4 foot long Royal in a 3x2x2 and he only ever uses the hides in there, he could be in a shoe box for all he'd notice. Buying a huge display vivarium will only lead to disappointment for you as Royals are not display animals they are hidden away animals you only know are there because you go find them and the more happy they are with their surroundings the less active they become, it's just their nature.
Now a nice carpet python or some other arboreal or semi arboreal snake in a vivarium like that would be brilliant.
On the heating front though, I Have a 6x2x2 heated by one 150w ceramic bulb, it does the job just fine, spends most of its time dimmed right down by the stat. An AHS for a standard vivarium in my opinion is overkill. |

Oh and thanks, a ceramic should suffice then. Will go or a stated 250w then it shouldn't ever have to struggle. |

you will struggle a big heating a 3ft high viv with just a 250w ceramic you would need to build a basking shelf or have some fitted log's about half way up under the bulb an set the hot spot on there.
once that is setup i would check what the cool/ambient temp's are to work out if you will need another heat source |

Cheers, I do want to have a big basking log in there. I might even scrap the 3ft height and just go for 2ft. Just thought that extra foot would be really good for viewing. |

kelf has a raised basking area under a ceramic bulb and an AHS for the rest. His viv is a small room though. |

Yeah I've seen it. I think an ahs might be overkill with a ceramic in a 5ft viv. |

a ceramic, guard an pulse stat is what you want for a viv, make sure you use a ceramic bulb holder though |
