the thermometer probes are in the rubs but the stat probe is on the mat/cable.
Depending on the rack I put the cable under the rub or if the rack is enclosed then on the back wall behind the rubs.

heat mats seem to be the most popular way. and the build from what i have seen looks quite simple. when dropping snakes of at breeders tonight I was having a look at his racking system. which at the moment holds 15 snakes from 06 to 09. as BE said its one heat mat per horizontal level. And as Dave said the pulse stat probe is taped to mats. He then has dual digital hygrometers and thermometers in each rub. What i did notice was that he has the heat mats on a shelf and the a few more thin strips of wood running across them with the rubs sitting on top of that.

done up a quick wee diagram to explain what i meant.

well its just a very basic idea of the structure. there are thing like cheap shelving unit in agros and the like that would probably work well......

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/catalogId/1500001501/partNumber/8754035.htm
this kind of idea. only thing is its pine. a deep book shelf would work as well for hatchlings.

Heat mats are popular and are just as easy to get the temp right as in a viv, just put the probe directly on the mat.

dave- does your inside RUBS get up to temp when the probe is directly on the mats...I have tried this, but inside the RUB doesnt get warm enough before the stat cuts out...?

Just adjust the thermostat until the required temp is reached inside the rub ignoring what the stat is showing.
If you put the probe inside a rub the response isnt quick enough and harder to maintain a constant setting.

Ikea do some trays big enough if you are not using lids.

It could be that the mat is under powered for the rack.
Also is the rack open on all sides or just the front?
I prefer to use heat cable with them as they emmit heat well and if temps aren't reached then run it under the tubs a 2nd or 3rd time.
Cable also warms up quicker so the temps are more stable.
Im going to be building some racks in the next few weeks with cable built inside the grp shelf making the shelf itself the heater.

i dont think its the mat anne, and the RUB dave is just sat on the mat on top of a stack.

The stat only goes up to 34*C but it needs to reach higher than that to achieve the 32*C inside the RUB.

What power is the mat?
Have you got anything under the mat to insulate it?

If you get the sizes that you need anne, then go to b&q and select the needed piece on contiboard, they give you the first 5 cuts free, that or have noticed they do some reasonably priced shelving units in there, the kind that just push together, NO TOOLS NEEDED!!! so an extra bonus for you LOL

Dave how and where would you fit the heat cable?

I am probably going to have to get one made cos i think it might be to techy for me..lol..

but i am fast running out of space..

trying to find someone down here to build one in case i am incapable of doing so..lol..which is likely..

the cable is normaly put under the rubs by routing the shelf out and putting the cable into the slot made by the router and for best results line the slot with foil tape.
I have also on my hatchling racks ran the cable on the back of the unit and taped it in place with good results.
