yo guys! after seeing probing done on angharads milk snake and some others, i decided to have a go of it myself. a mate of mine who's been a herp for 15+ years has given me a set of probes he had spare.
so tonight i went for it.
lubed up the probe, gently inserted it into the cloaca and turned it a little. the probe went in with ease and no pushing was needed.
so, this is how far it went in... (PHOTO DELETED AS I'M A COMPLETE PLONKER)
looks like coco is actually a male!! doh! still love him!!
ps - the probe looks massive in the pic but it's really not as huge as it looks |

So were you not sure if Coco was male or female in the first place, or just wanted to give it a go?

nah i didnt have a clue but i called him a her. i wanted to do it for ages and my mate had done it loads previously as he used to breed rat snakes etc when he was younger. its easier than i thought. i was proper crapping myself though, didn't want to hurt the bugger. but the probe went in no worries - snake didnt even flinch. loves it! |

I ought to get Ripley probed to be honest, I'm only assuming he's male because of his cloacal spurs and longish tail. Haha but I could easily be wrong! At least you know to re-paint Coco's bedroom blue now hehe. |

You probably don't need to get it done again. If it went in all that way then he's definitely a boy! It just hits muscle when they are female and won't go in very far at all. I tried having a go at popping when I first got Ripley, but I think I was trying to be too gentle, because nothing popped out lol. |

Please please please tell me you inserted the probe towards the tail and not the head. |

yeah i think ill get him to double check. christ - even i got thinking then after seeing the pic!! i took the pic on the bed quick after doing it but i forgot that she'd turned hah. i feel like such a plonker :( gutted!! anyway - snake seems fine and not bothered one bit by the probin experience. i think im more bloody shamed and embarrassed than the snakes bothered by having a metal probe in the holiest of holies! |

I want to get Doug probed. I bought him as a male, but have never had him checked...could change breeding plans significantly if Doug is actually Mrs Douglas!! LOL. I just need to find someone with the know how who wouldn't mind me dropping round.... |
