My OH's building some new vivs for the big girls at work. Firstly, I'm terrified that the changes I will make are going to cause them problems (they've been kept in the same way since the seventies/eighties). Secondly, they're big royals (approx 5 foot) will a 3x2x2 be big enough or should I go for 4x2x2 with more than 2 hides? They have always been kept together, but I intend to separate them. I'm torn as I know how easily stressed Royals can be and they're doing ok at the moment.

I would say 3x2x2 would be fine because:

1. Rule of thumb for viv fits (i.e. length of viv + width = length of snake).
2. You're intending to seperate them. If you were going to keep 2 in same viv then no 1 above requires more space i.e. 4x2x2.
3. Royals aren't mad keen on big environments. This would stress them out more.
4. They are fully grown (I know they grow all their life but you know what I mean).

Its great to see someone who has kept these for so long. You have photos? Would love to see some.

It will obviously cause some stress but in my short experience (esp. compared to you) they'll take better to moving vivs within your house opposed to travelling. Basically when someone purchases a NEW snake it is suggested they wait at least a week before handling/ feeding to allow the snake to settle. Though some of this wait is down to a new environment, most of it is because most people will be transporting their snakes from the store/ breeder to their new home.

I think they'd be ok in terms of a new viv. I know snakes aren't social creatures but if they've been together all that time, that would be the only concern for me as they are accustomed to eachother.

Hope this helps.
