Hi guys,
Any ideas for a good substrate to use that's easy to get hold of, and good for royals?
Was given some bark when first brought the set up, but now the shop i brought it from charge 10 quid for a small bag.
Using newspaper at the moment and its doing my head in, looks so chip shop like.
Ideas guys
Cheers.

I think aspen shavings are the best for royals. I pay around £4 for a bag

You mean they're charging ten quid for a bag of Orchid bark 0_0!

Orchid bark is one of the best substrates to use 'cause it holds the humidity really well. It's what I like to use for that purpose, but also 'cause to me it looks most natural. Could you not use a different shop? What about online? I was recomended Blue Lizard, and they're really good and quick. Prices are good too.

If not a lot of people use Aspen. Some perfer it to Orchid bark. I've never used it myself, but it seems perfectly fine for a lot of snakes including Royals, so you could try and get some of that instead.

Or, if the print on the newspaper is all you don't like about it try and get hold of printless sheets. I don't know where you'd go to find them though, so maybe someone else can direct you there : )

Just me and my zoo.

Yes, Blue Lizard's good, and i've got a gigantic bale of aspen from surrey Pet Supplies for under £19. Basic delivery's £4 or 5 but I ordered some other stuff as well.

Hodgie swears by lining paper (for walls) from B&Q, which looks like unprinted newspaper.

I am using aspen at the moment but will changing over to horse bedding (cannot remember the name) as it is near enough the same as aspen, just 7 quid for a 20kg bag, and takes ages to use up. Looks near enough exactly the same as well
I do use orchid bark for my boa setup and it looks good, but I didnkt like it for my royals as it is near enough the same colour as them, and it didn't hold there wee very well.

The horse bedding stuff is called 'Aubiose' and I've heard it's good stuff - yes, if you have a handy equestrian shop, you're quids-in at that price.

Never heard of it before I came on the forums - I guess there are more snakes than horses bedding down on it from what I've read.

You're welcome - though it was Danny who suggested it first.

I must make the effort to see if there are any shops round here who sell it, and organise some transport; it's incredibly cheap compared with rep shops, though I have my big aspen bale still sitting at the bottom of the stairs ... balefully ...

The draw of the cheap substrate is strong but I just love the way orchid bark looks, The only snake that doesn't get orchid bark is the dungsnake, I'd never find his many deposits.
