Well over about the past 2-3 months I have been constantly looking around the internet for prices of snakes to see what I could get on my budget to hopefully start breeding.
I am possibly getting a £1,000 loan off a family friend, and was wondering what the more experienced royal owners think I should do, or even breeders.
I am going to set £250 aside for like a rack, and rubs, and heating and hides etc etc...
So will have around £750 for the actualy snakes.
My dad thinks I should just go with 2 normals, save my money a bit, and see how things go.
My mum thinks I should possibly try for 2 albinos, then although they would be babies and I'd have to wait a while, I'd be guaranteed albinos back to recoup some money.
And I am just mixed up about what would be the best idea to go for.
Hopefully you guys can shed some light on it for me, and give me your opinion of what you think would be the best route to take
Thanks for reading, any advice would be very appreciated.

Firstly you might want to reconsider putting aside £250 and increase it. I recently built a 18 x 12litre rub rack and it was over £500 for the heating, rubs, hides, water bowls, thermostat etc. I didn't get the "best" deal on hides and water bowls but the thermostat, hide and water bowls all together cost me about £150, £50 for a heat cable ontop is £200 already and it cost me another £150 for 18 RUB's, I'm sure you can lower it by finding cheaper equipment or buying second hand though.

Personally I'd (And I am xP) go for some co-dom morphs first, not only will you have 100% back on getting morphs but also you'd be able to increase your personal collection (and breeding prospects) with a double co-dom gene. I think when it comes to which morphs you want to start breeding with you're better off just picking what morphs you enjoy the most, I've not seen many morphs struggling to be sold no matter what they are, everyone is after them at the moment so it's a good time to sell.

Just my opinion but I'm not a breeder yet so what do I know ^^

You know I always appreciate your opinion Stephen.
As for the costs of setting up, I can get 10 6L RUBs, and 10 water bowls for £45.
And me and my dad are going to be making the hides to keep costs down.
I am also going to "recycle" my wardrobe into the rack, so I may only need to buy a very very small amount of wood.
As for heat cable, as I know it's expensive, I was going to make it 2 rubs high by 5 across, and get a long heat mat (£17 each) to go across the back of the RUBs... I already have a thermostat, and a thermometer.
So I think £250 maybe £300 at a push would be enough for what I need personally.

As for the snakes, someone suggested I get perhaps a male spider (which I have coming in about 8 weeks anyway with choice of sexes) and get maybe 2 or 3 normal breedable sized females.
That way I have more chance of producing more spiders.

If you have already paid for the spider then I'd be tempted to get a pastel and two yellowbellys (one male one female) so in a couple of years you should have some bumble bees and Ivories both should be good sellers, scales and tails have pastels and yellow bellys should get all three for about £600 so if your lucky you might even be able to get a pinstripe aswell

I`d have to disagree as from what i`ve seen and heard Yellow Bellies aren`t big sellers. Just look at this thread on the dark side for an Ivory

Been up for sale for nearly a year.
When i bought my pinstripe from DJ Reptiles he told me "no one wants them", the only reason i can think of is that yellow bellies dont appear to blow you away when mixed to other morphs.
Personally i`d get a Pastel, lesser, and a Pinstripe (or a Spider), 1 Male and 2 Females in any order then you`ll have a good base to get some good morphs.

reptilemadd;
Well I have choice of sexes on the spider, but I was thinking male, then if I could get a reasonable morphed female of good size for around £500, I could breed them at the end of this year or maybe mid 2012, depending on the size of the female.
And he is already paid for, so that won't be coming out of the £1,000.

Hodgie;
I will be selling them cheap though, I'm not doing it to become rich or something, if I was I'd get a huge business loan and go for high end morphs.
My main thing is the satisfaction of doing it, and selling nice snakes for a good price, to people I know will look after them properly.
I won't just sell to the first person who comes up with the money.
But I would obviously be daft if I put all my money into a project that wasn't going to at least have some return.
I also don't know whether I want to house the adults in a rack style system/big RUBs, or in vivs.
I have a lot to think about

If its for satisfaction, which like you is my reason then i`d suggest aiming for the morphs that you`d really like to achieve. For me i`d like a Jigsaw, lemonblast, spinnerblast and fire bumbleebees. Thats why i have the morphs that i have.
I started with vivs and yeh they are great all decorated out but when you start owning more and more snakes they will take up a phenominal amount of space. I`ve built a very cheap rack system from MDF with rubs, its not imposing and does the job just great.

I have a few that I know I want, Pied, Cinna Bee, Black Pastel Yellow Belly, BlkEL, Super Cinnamon etc..
I wouldn't be keeping everything I produce obviously lol, need to make something back to pay the person who's fronting me the cash to begin with.
Then look to getting slightly more expensive stuff

Oh How Original I'd stay away from super cinny's if I were you only cause I seem to have read that a lot are born with kinks, but if you know what morphs you like I'd try and find a breeder that has most of them and maybe they will do you a deal, if you were to buy a few at once, and Hodgie I would agree from the post on the dark side, it would appear that nobody wants Ivories but it might also be that the price is too high now for that particular morph, after all something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and if oh how original isn't doing it for the big bucks maybe charging 4 or 5 hundred for an Ivorie would have people bitting his hand off.

Back to the original question though buy the snakes you are attracted to and hopefully sell any babies at a price you are happy with and good luck

Yeah, that's a good example to use, if someone was selling an Ivory at £700-800, then I would put mine for sale at £400-500.
Not to undercut people, but give people a fair chance at owning the snakes they want, at a fair price, I don't believe in selling them for thousands and thousands.
They do all the breeding work, and giving birth, we just feed them, clean them etc... Which we would do anyway.
I'd prefer to be fair than greedy

It's funny I've always been of the same mind regards to the selling prices, I intend to breed my het clowns when they are big enough and right from the start have always said I'm not going to charge as much as others do, not to undercut them but as you say to give people a fair chance of getting a snake they really want. In fact myself and a few other people on here have talked about doing swaps which if they were all serious is something I would rather do than sell them the snakes, this hobby is hard enough on the pocket without trying to sell what is a beautiful animal for silly money.

But on the flip side we seem to live in an upside down world as often it's the more expensive thing that sells rather than the cheaper, because most people think if your selling it cheaper than everyone else there must be something wrong with it.......

Sorry for what turned into a bit of a rant but it's a subject I feel strongly about

Edit: Original have a look at Pi Reptiles they have a few of the morphs your looking for, for sale.
