I don't claim to know everything (probably very little), but i'm creating this thread for any curious people who may be thinking of buying a snake, and stumbles onto this site. so please add your 2 pence worth.

First port of call - http://www.theroyalpython.co.uk/royal_python_care_sheet.htm

start up Equipment

Small Rub (really useful box)
2 hides
2 water bowls (1 to aid humidity)
7w heat mat (placed outside to avoid burns)
substrate (bark, kitchen roll ect)
fake plants
thermometer
hygrometer
feeding tongs
Disinfectant (reptile friendly)
A really good (royal care) book!

The above can cost between £30 and £60, depending on what you use and where you buy from.

6-9 months later

Vivarium/Larger Rub
Heat source (infra-red, ceramic or heat lamp)
Lamp guard
Thermostat
Thermometer(s)/hydrometer
2 Larger hides
Larger water bowl(s)
more fake plants
substrate
and decoration as required

Cost = a fortune, hey! but you have time to save up.

I wouldnt say you need 2 water bowls, you just move the first into the hot end for more humidity, you don't really need a royal care book but it's. A nice bonus and fake plants are normally more of an aesthetic thing unless you have alot of room to fill in, other than that it's grand.

Oh and it's a hygrometer not a hydrometer, and it's not really needed for royal keeping unless you get a problem.

Nice thread though.

We won't flame you lol!

A good addition might be useful online suppliers - imo surrey pet supplies are cheapest for vivs (2' start at £28) also hides, plants; Blue Lizard have bigger selection of electrical stuff/stats; also Swellreptiles are good. Shop around.

Amendment - sorry - realise you've included surrey pet supplies link already.

Staples sell rubs and their own brand plastic lockable box; rub locks are better but royals and corns shouldn't be able to get out of cheaper boxes (touch wood.)

Other people may have more suggestions.

For RUB sizes:

up to 200g = 9L size
up to 700g = 17L size
permanent = 64L size. 33L works too but I like my RUBs taller so I can do a wee bit of decorating.

some females get too big for a RUB...

Definitely need a thermostat or a rheostat or at least something that can regulate the heat output of your heat sources.

You can use flexwatt heat tape or UTH that is placed under the RUB as long as you put a block of wood or some such around the heat tape to make sure the floor of the RUB doesn't get smashed onto the shelf trapping the heat tape/UTH in between them. There has to be space in-between for the heat to circulate. The plastic "buttons" that come on most UTH's is not quite reliable enough to maintain that space.

Hope this helps.

One thing missing in my opinion is a good notebook. Record keeping is soooooo important. I buy little hardback books for each snake (and spider, lol) and write anything of importance down.
