i picked trevor up on sat he is a 9 month old royal he can with set up. he has a heat mat which i have read is a big no no. there is a light fitting in there but no guard so i removed the bulb to stop him breaking it. there is a thermostat its make is tc 2 uk. it looks a bit like a digital thermometer with a probe coming off it and also a place to plug in the light as well as the heat mat.
when we got trevor home we set up the viv. we have no instructions for the stat but managed to find some online. the stat was set but by that night was only reading 23 degrees so i dont think its working the heat mat was working. so now to the real question. i have a habistat stat spare would it be ok to attach the heat mat to the wall with the habistat stat as a temp measure untill i can get a bulb guard and stat. and also where is the best place to buy these things. sorry for the essay but i figured the more info the better

Sounds like what you are describing isn't a stat but in fact a digital therm. Stats dont normally have digi read outs, they usually have a dial and a ring of temp settings and 3 cables coming off them. Not sure on mats and stats myself as i only use bulbs and ceramic lamps so someone else will need to answer that question. As for where to get stuff, surrey pet supplies on line is where alot of folk get theirs, I'm a big fan of ebay!
Tip for buying guards: decide on the type of heat lamp you want and get it first, then buy the guard to fit as they vary in size and you need it to be an inch bigger all round the bulb. |

Hi Lisa, YES the tc 2 uk you describe is a thermostat. Here's a little info.
The Thermo Control II is a digital thermostat with a temperature range of 0-50°C. The permanent temperature display also allows its use as thermometer. Heaters of up to 1000W can be connected through a coupling. A second coupling is controlled through an integrated timer. It can be used to set operating hours for lighting or ventilators. The external sensor can measure in water and air.
In addition the Thermo Control II has an alarm function which warns optically and acoustically if the measured temperature is too high or too low (value can be set).
As a temporary measure while you fix you viv up i would pick up a R.U.B or similar product. (staples, argos, pound shops). Tape the stat probe directly to the heat mat then place the tub directly on top of heaqt mat so that half of the tub is covered. Set the stat so that the temp using a digital thermometer if using the habistat or the temp from the probe on the TC 2 is reading 90F (32C) at the surface of the hot side of the tub. Try and keep the temp in the room no lower than 75F - 80F and you'll have a happy royal.

| looks like i may have just set the stat up incorrectly will refer to the manual again. i have a spare mat so ill try it outside the viv and if i can get it to work . thanks for the advice x |

| The mat outside of a vivarium wont really do any good at all, the wood is a very good insulator so the mat would have to get very hot to have any effect, plus with the weight of the vivarium on it there is a chance of thermal blaocking and the mat heating to very dangerous levels. On the wall is useless too, its a contact heater so again it would have to get very hot to start heating the air. I would say a piece of lino or a carpet tile over the mat for now will be OK just to put some separation between the snake and the mat as a temporary fix while you sort out a bulb guard, I would say to use a ceramic heat bulb too with your thermostat as its an on/off type and may get annoying, you'd also need a ceramic bulb holder too but its something to consider. |

have set the mat and stat up outside the viv just to check the stat is working so far so good have actually worked out how to use it now. thanks for the idea about a peice of carpet thats a lot easier. will sort a guard and bulb out tomorrow as im going away in 2 weeks and wouldnt wanna leave him without the proper equipment.

| You`ll be fine with the mat inside the viv for a temporary setup, i`ve kept plenty of Royals this way (generally move them into the rack system when they are around 600 - 700g) As lotabob has already said put something over the top of it, if you dont have any lino or carpet tile then wall paper or a couple of sheets of news paper will do just as well. |
