was just wondering is there any difference between the bark from pet shops and the bark from B&Q.
except the price. the pet shop i go to it's £4 per 1kg and it's £7 for 100L in B&Q
is there any difference or is it just the price. |

| It depends what type of bark it is in B&Q, some woods and barks are toxic to snakes (Pine & Cedar come to mind). |

yeah plus you buy as is,so its not treated at all.I no people with tegu's etc that buy bags of bark like that,as they need lots of it to fill there vivs.
The pet shop bark/substrate would be expensive to buy for them. |

In an idle moment I googled the above (cheapest I reckon for substrates and other stuff) and was shocked to see that Trixie are marketing pine bark - 'ideal for many species of snakes' ...
Yes, as Bob says - coniferous woods are toxic to snakes. And the bark you find in B&Q will probably contain a lot of bugs and foreign bodies as it's designed for outdoor use. However some reptile shops don't half bung the price up for the specialist substrates - best to shop around. The cheapest alternative to conventional brands of reptile substrates I've come across are Aubiose (looks like aspen) which is available from equestrian suppliers, but you'll probably need to have your own transport to fetch a bale, (sorry don't know price but it's far cheaper than conventional aspen) and Megazorb, which again looks like aspen.

Sorry, I haven't yet come across a similarly cheap source of orchid bark or bark lookalike. But hope this helps a bit.

yeah :P if its just for a small snake viv,Id get the petshop kind and have piece of mind 
there is bark you can buy thats clean and bug free,for example i buy in bark for bonsai soil mixes,for my trees but thats 75 litre £32.95.
People do buy the b&Q stuff,but they must treat it themselfs as its full of bugs and stuff. |
