Kelf im not showing any disrespect, and from my post i did make a valid point in that i have a Royal who was started on mice and won`t switch over. She`s now well over 2kg and to keep her on mice isn`t cheap or practical. Surely the whole point of the debate is about feeding compitantly. Anyway i`ll watch from the side lines. Peace |

Oh, Lotabob! You're so magnanimous.
Now I feel bad because I got caught up with life... didn't quite account for Spring Break - kids out of school and I had to double between working and taking care of kids at the same time.
Did I make the cut? Or was it super late???

I dont think this fun debate will come with monster penalties for a little bit of tardiness. Maybe as its the 1st debate a bit of flexing of the rules could be OK with everyones agreement, I'm enjoying it so far even though i'm not exactly sure whats going on or where its heading but I will follow it and maybe it will all make more sense as it gets to the end.
All else fails the debate can be scrapped and plan b can be executed. TRP Jelly Wrestling (Jaffa Jelly to keep the mods happy). |

This is how debates usually work - There's a topic.
Whoever agrees with the topic gets to be the Affirmative (in this case the Rat Team).
The ones who disagree with the topic gets to be the Negative (in this case the Mouse Team).
After the team members are set, the team gets to introduce themselves. Okay, just a note - just because somebody is arguing for the Affirmative doesn't mean that they personally agree with the topic... same with the Negative. The object of the debate is to exercise your research/thinking/presenting skills and not necessarily to convince somebody that you are right. Make sense? But, of course, it is much easier to debate a topic if you argue for your personal position... like for this particular debate, it is easier for me because I happen to believe personally that rats are better than mice because I feed my snakes rats. But, I could just as well argue for the Negative even if I don't necessarily hold that position.
Okay, so after the teams are set and the introductions are made, then the arguments start. Usually, the Affirmative presents their first argument speech then the Negative presents their first argument. This gives the Affirmative a slight advantage because they can set the definitions in the first speech. For example, I can set the definition of Rats to include the African Soft-Fur Rat even if, technically, they're not really rats... because they're not really mice either. So, I get the advantage of claiming the African Rat to solidify the Rat position. Of course, the Negative team can always contest the definition in their first argument. If this happens, then the judge will decide whose definition will be used in the debate - and his decision would be based on who presented the best reasoning for the definition and not necessarily which one is scientifically "correct". Make sense?
So then, after the first argument speech, the Affirmative presents the 2nd argument, Negative presents their 2nd argument, then on and on to the 3rd argument and beyond so that the Negative gets to give the last argument speech.
When all the arguments are presented, then it is time for rebuttals.
Now, notice that each argument only presents a claim for the position they hold without rebutting the position of the other side. In the rebuttals section, the Negative side gets to start by rebutting the first argument presented by the Affirmative side. Then the Affirmative gets to rebut the first argument of the Negative side. They pingpong back and forth until all the arguments have been rebutted, so the Affirmative gets to go last. Now, in an oral debate, this gives the Affirmative side another advantage - because a lot of times, the last speech leaves a higher impression on the judges.
On the internet, the order of speeches doesn't matter as much because you can always read back on all the speeches presented... so that's why Janie decided to present her Negative argument before the Affirmative presented theirs because or her schedule.
Now, of course, it is always fun to do Jelly Wrestling... I'm all for that! LOL! Except... I don't know what a Jaffa Jelly is... must be a Brit thing.

Would like to make a suggestion, as Anatess is in the US they are a fair few hours behind us, It doesnt seem right that any posts from anatess has to post to suit our times. We all have our own time away from the forums and all sorts of other things to be dealing with on a daily basis, I suggest scrapping the deadline time and just leave it as the date and not a timescale. |

We should revise the rules completely for the next debate, how do we pick the subject of the next? Do it like the photo comp, winner picks? If we win then as a team we decide on a subject and if you win you pick?? |

Purely from the spectator POV and an actual interest in figures can anyone on team rats look into the uptake of vitamins, minerals etc, it would be interesting to know what percentage (or any figures, facts etc) of the nutritional values of the prey are actually uptaken by the body and what passes straight through. Or get your lab coat on, take an empty snake, 2 equal prey items do a nutritional analysis of the uneaten prey and an analysis of whatever comes back out of the snake, the difference been what has been absorbed to make snake. Easy huh? My thinking being that its ok to say x has 100 of Vitamin M (M for made up) and y has 3000 of Vitamin M when a healthy animal only needs 10 of vitamin M, then it becomes an argument of who has the most nutritious poop. Thinking of Tortoises I was researching tortoises and some tortoises live on scrub so a diet of healthy fruit and veg is actually bad for their health as there digestive system is not evolved to deal with this.
