My oldest Royal has lately developed a pink underside on the bottom 1/3rd of her. It's not her usual pinkish look that she gets before she sheds. I've recently moved her into a new tank from the one I was given with her, and she finally has a heat mat that works well. Could it be burns?

Tonight I ran my finger just lightly over the underside of her tail and I felt a pop and clear fluid came out from under her scale, it didn't have any smell to it. Could it be burn blisters? Her viv is very well ventilated and I think scale rot is unlikely, but I haven't had snakes for very long.

Could someone please help, I'm so worried about her and I'd like advice before going to the vets (if needed).

Thank you

Oh dear! That doesn't sound good at all! It does sound very much like burns to me - is the mat statted? How much does she weight? Even a statted mat can cause burns to a heavy bodied snake as the heat just continues to build under the snakes weight.

The mat is secured down with tape so s he can't get under it like she did on the one that didn't provide enough heat for her. Recently I've taped a few sheets of thick paper over it to cancel out some of heat which I hope will help

She's pretty heavy but I've never put her on the scales, she's a little over 4ft and 6-7 y/o.

Thanks for replying.

At that kind of size I think it would be fair to say she's probably too big for a mat - this is why they get bad press for Royals. Is it connected to a thermostat to control the heat?? They get pretty damn hot - try holding the palm of your hand on the same spot for a few minutes! Have you considered switching to a ceramic / IR bulb setup?

Personally I wouldn't know how to effectively treat burns so would at least call a reptile vet for advise - and look at rectifying the cause.

It can't be turned up or down, for some reason I can't find those kind of heat mats anywhere. I thought about a heat bulb but I wasn't sure if they'd be okay for snakes as they like to absorb heat from objects. I'll get one and test it out.

Thanks for the advice! (:

I agree it does sound like a burn, I also advise contacting a reptile vet to see what advice they give for burns, as it's not something I've had to deal with yet,
Search google for a reptile thermostat you connect this to the heat mat to control tempetures, no matter on what heat source you use you will need a thermostat,

Thank you, I've just looked at a few on the internet and will buy one soon.

Without trying to sound harsh soon needs to be when you wake up, the whole time you have the mat on with no thermostat you are risking your snakes life IMO

at that size she would be too heavy for a heat mat you need to change the heating to either ir or ceramic bulb, guarded and statted.

i would get her to a vet to check her over. i have never had to deal with a snake with burns but it might be worth having a read on the dark side (rfuk), i have seen threads on there about treating snakes with burns

yes does sound like burns an you need to get her to a reptile vet.
also turn off the heatmat and any other heat sources untill you get a thermostat to control the temps, a heatmat can run at 40+ without a thermostat and as said a heatmat is not good for a big royal due to thermal blocking

Hi, very sorry to hear and good luck with her. Yes, as others have said, vet and change of setup asap.

So many people are sold snakes/setups without stats - I'd never heard of stats myself until I found the forums - thank goodness I did.

The care sheet on this forum is a good source of info too, about setup and everything.

All the very best with her, keep us posted and any other questions, there's always someone on here happy to help. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for your replys.

She seems to have realised that she needs to stay off the heat mat for now, I don't feel too confident about turning it off completely because my room gets very cold at night.

I've covered it as much as I can and for it to still be safe, and I'll be looking into the heat bulbs and thermostats tomorrow.

Is there anything I can do for her untill I'm able to get her to the vets? I feel terrible.

I haven't had snakes for very long and I only took her and another one on after getting my first because the people didn't want them anymore. They arrived in such a bad condition it was hard to believe that they were still alive at all. I just wanted to 'save' them so to speak, but I guess I've done more damage than good.

I feel like a bad step mum D:

dont feel too bad i caused one of my first snakes to have a bad RI due to having the setup wrong.
i would still turn the heatmat off, its not worth the risk of making the burns worse when she goes back on the heatmat.
if your worried about the cold then put a warm (not hot) water bottle wrapped in a towel in the viv overnight.
and i would remove all of the substrate an hoover it out so its all gone an use kitchen roll or similar as bedding(not toilet roll though), just lay sheets of it over the floor.
as you said it popped a blister when you touched her belly, if theres an open wound from a popped blister an some substrate gets in there it could get infected.
if you google snake burn treatment theres a few things that you can put on her to help untill you get to the vets but cant remember what they are.
all the best an keep us updated

Turn the mat off!

No heat is much better for her than burning herself. You really need to have a read of a few care sheets. Then sort the heat matter out as soon as possible.

as long as its not a fluffy one where bits of thread can come off it should be ok.
but as said the mat needs to be off asap

If you can get hold of some tamodine (from a rep shop or vet's, or any vet, not just a rep vet, should be able to sell you something equally suitable without prescription) bathing the blister and inflamed areas with this is good first aid. Hibiscrub (from a vet or Boots') is good too. But don't use iodine - this can make matters far worse.

Good luck with her.

sorry - amendment - there is tamodine wound cleanser, and tamodine disinfectant - it's the wound cleanser you want. This will minimalise infection and keep her clean until the vet sees her.

Thank you, that's really helpful. I've just scrubbed her viv from head to toe with anti bacterial spray and laid a fresh towel down insted of bedding. I'll look for those treatments tomorrow.

Thanks again (:
